Art Bridge

Art Bridge — known locally as Khua Silapa — isn’t a bridge at all. It’s a two-storey gallery complex on Phahonyothin Road in Ban Du subdistrict, close to the Kok River on Chiang Rai’s edge of town, and the name refers to the project’s aim of connecting art to everyday community life, not a physical river crossing. Entry is free, and it’s open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 10:00 to 19:00, closed Mondays.
The venue grew out of the Chiang Rai Artist Fund, a support initiative for local artists that National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat — the sculptor and painter behind the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) — helped establish with an initial 500,000 THB donation. That fund underwrites the gallery space: rotating exhibitions of work by the fund’s supported artists sit alongside broader Thai artist shows and pieces from international contributors, spread across the building’s two floors. An attached art school runs alongside the galleries, giving Chiang Rai’s next generation of artists a place to train and exhibit rather than leave the province for opportunities elsewhere.
It functions as much as a community hub as a gallery. A cafe and restaurant on site serve reasonably priced Thai food and coffee, and a small souvenir shop sells prints and crafts made by the artists whose work hangs upstairs. On a weekday afternoon it’s genuinely quiet — closer to a working studio complex than a tourist stop, which is part of the appeal if you’ve already done the temple circuit and want something less scripted.
Insider Tip: Skip the crowds at Wat Rong Khun (Chalermchai’s more famous project) mid-morning and come here instead — Art Bridge rarely gets more than a handful of visitors at once, and you can talk to working artists rather than just view finished pieces behind glass.
Watch out: Because it’s a working gallery and art school rather than a fixed museum collection, what’s on display changes — don’t come expecting a specific piece you saw in an old photo online. Call ahead if you have something particular in mind.
Comfortable walking shoes are enough; there’s no dress code beyond normal daytime wear. It’s reachable by tuk-tuk or songthaew from central Chiang Rai in about 10-15 minutes, or a longer walk if you’re staying nearby.
