Wat Phra Phutthabat Phu Pan Kham
วัดพระพุทธบาทภูพานคำ
Wat Phra Phutthabat Phu Pan Kham sits on the slope of Phu Pan Kham mountain in Ubolratana district, Khon Kaen, right by the entrance to Ubolratana Dam — a detail worth stating plainly, because the name is routinely confused with Ubon Ratchathani province, a separate place roughly 200 km away. What’s actually here is a footprint shrine and a 14-metre white standing Buddha with a genuinely good reservoir view, free to visit, open daily 08:00-17:00.
The site’s history is recent and specific rather than ancient legend: in 1949, Phra Ajarn Boon Panyawuttho and four monks on a walking pilgrimage stopped to rest and meditate here, drawn by how quiet the spot was. They came across a large natural well shaped unmistakably like an oversized human footprint and took it as a Buddha footprint — the origin of the mondop that now shelters it. The temple grew up around that discovery rather than being built to a plan first.
Getting to the summit shrine takes some effort or none at all, depending on preference: a stairway of 1,049 steps climbs from the base, graded gently enough that it’s a manageable climb rather than a punishing one, or a paved road lets vehicles drive straight to the top. Either way, the payoff at the summit is the same — Ubolratana Dam’s reservoir spread out below, hills on the far shore, and the 14-metre white standing Buddha visible from a considerable distance, a local landmark for boats and villages around the lake.

Insider Tip: If you’re driving rather than climbing, go in the late afternoon — the light over the reservoir is best in the last two hours before sunset, and you’ll have the summit largely to yourself since most day-trippers to Ubolratana Dam stick to the boat piers below.
The footprint mondop and the surrounding shrines mix Isan temple style with the practical layout of a pilgrimage site rather than a manicured tourist attraction — expect stone, shade trees, and a working monastic feel rather than polish. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering the mondop, and treat the footprint itself with the same respect as a Buddha image. It combines naturally with a stop at Ubolratana Dam itself, since the access road runs right past the reservoir’s main viewing points on the way up.
