Khun Chae Waterfall

Khun Chae Waterfall is a six-tier cascade inside Khun Chae National Park in Chiang Rai’s Wiang Pa Pao district, each tier dropping 10-20 metres through dry evergreen and mixed deciduous forest. It is not free — this is the most important correction to make before you go, since several older listings still describe it that way. As a national park waterfall it carries the standard park entry fee: 100 THB for foreign adults, 50 THB for foreign children, 20 THB for Thai adults, 10 THB for Thai children, plus a small vehicle charge at the gate.

The park itself covers roughly 280 sq km of forested terrain, gazetted in 1995, with Khun Chae as its best-known waterfall alongside trekking routes toward Doi Langka Luang. Water flow and the size of the swimming pools at each tier shift with the season — expect the fullest cascades and coolest pools during and just after the rainy months (June-November), and a thinner, quieter flow in the dry season from December through April.

Insider Tip: Pay the entry fee at the park checkpoint on the way in, not at the waterfall itself — there’s no separate ticket booth at the falls, and arriving without a receipt can mean a walk back to the gate.

Getting to the trailhead from the checkpoint involves a walk through jungle terrain to reach the lower tiers; the path can be uneven and slippery after rain, so proper footwear matters more here than swimwear. Higher tiers require more sustained walking and are less consistently maintained than the lower pools, so check current trail conditions at the park office before committing to the full six-tier route.

Watch out: Facilities at the falls themselves are minimal — no food stalls at the waterfall, so bring water and snacks from Wiang Pa Pao town before heading in. Mobile signal is patchy once you’re inside the forest cover.

The park gates close at 16:30, and rangers won’t let you start the walk in much past mid-afternoon, so aim to arrive by early-to-mid afternoon at the latest to see the falls properly and get back out before closing.

Khun Chae rewards travellers who treat it as a proper national park visit — paid entry, sturdy shoes, and a realistic time buffer before the 16:30 gate closing — rather than a quick free roadside stop. For a shorter alternative in the same district, Khun Kon Waterfall is a nearby option with an easier approach.
