Bo Nam Ron is the natural hot spring beside the old Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai highway in Wiang Pa Pao district, better known locally as Mae Khachan hot springs — roughly the halfway point on the road between the two cities. Entry is free, and the springs are the reason drivers pull over: source pools reach around 90°C, hot enough to hard-boil an egg in a few minutes, which is exactly what most visitors do here.

A handful of pools sit close together at different temperatures. The hottest, nearest the road, are for cooking rather than bathing — vendors sell baskets of chicken and quail eggs to lower in on strings, ready in three to five minutes. Cooler pools and shallow troughs further back are set up for soaking feet rather than full immersion. Steam rises visibly off the hottest pools most of the day, and the sulphur smell typical of geothermal water is noticeable but not overwhelming. Basic facilities — food stalls, a coffee stand, a souvenir shop — cluster around the parking area, reflecting its role as a driving-route rest stop rather than a spa destination.

It’s a functional stop rather than a scenic one: most people are here 20-30 minutes on their way between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, not settling in for an afternoon. Traffic on Highway 118 means it can get busy around midday with tour vans and road-trippers stretching their legs.

Insider Tip: Bring your own eggs if you’re passing a market earlier in the drive — vendors on site sell them too, but at a markup over what you’d pay in town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the other hot springs near Chiang Rai?
No. Chiang Rai province has several separate hot springs. This one, in Mae Chedi Mai subdistrict of Wiang Pa Pao district, is the roadside stop commonly known as Mae Khachan hot springs, roughly midway on the old Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai highway. Pong Phra Bat hot spring, near Ban Du about 15km from Chiang Rai city, is a different site entirely — check which one a route or tour actually stops at.
Can you really boil eggs in the water?
Yes. The hottest source pools reach around 90°C, hot enough to hard-boil chicken or quail eggs in a few minutes. Vendors on site sell eggs for this if you don't bring your own.
Is there an entrance fee?
No, entry is free for both Thai and foreign visitors.
Can you actually bathe in the pools?
The hottest pools are too hot to enter and are reserved for egg-boiling. Cooler pools and foot-soaking troughs nearby are set up for wading rather than full bathing.
What facilities are there?
Basic roadside facilities — food vendors, a coffee stand, and a souvenir shop cluster around the springs, since it's primarily a driving-route rest stop rather than a resort.
