Laem Chang Noi

Laem Chang Noi is the cape on Koh Chang’s own north shore, near Klong Son village and the Mu Ko Chang National Park headquarters, looking out across a shallow strait to the small uninhabited islet of Koh Chang Noi. It’s a shore spot, not a boat trip — reaching the cape itself on foot or by motorbike costs nothing, since the fee only kicks in if you join a longtail out into the channel, which falls inside the national park.

The name comes from Hat Klong Son, the beach village to the south: seen from there, the hill on the cape and the low rise on the islet opposite are said to resemble a baby elephant lying down, which is how both the cape and the islet ended up sharing the name “chang noi” — little elephant. Standing on the cape, the view is the point — the strait between here and the islet holds a shallow coral reef, visible from shore on a calm day even before you get in the water, with Koh Chang’s forested north coast at your back and open sea ahead.

There’s nothing built here. No restaurant, no shop, no shade shelter beyond what the tree line gives you — this is a quiet stop for the view and a walk along the rocks, not a beach day with sunloungers. Longtail operators based out of Klong Son and the Ao Tham Noi pier run snorkel trips into the strait itself, landing on Koh Chang Noi’s small sandy patch on the far side; from the cape, you’re watching that water rather than swimming in it unless you arrange a boat.

November to April gives the calmest sea and the clearest view across the strait; during the rainy season the channel gets choppy and visibility drops, though the cape itself is accessible year-round since it’s dry land.

Insider Tip: Combine the cape with the boat trip across to Koh Chang Noi if you want to actually snorkel the reef rather than just look at it — arrange the longtail from Klong Son or Ao Tham Noi pier, not from the southern piers that serve Koh Wai and Koh Rang.

Watch out: There’s no vehicle track all the way to the shoreline — the last stretch from the ring road is on foot, and there’s no signage to speak of. Ask in Klong Son village if you can’t find the track down.
