Overview

Bang Niang (บางเนียง) is the beach village a few kilometres north of Nang Thong / La On on the Khao Lak strip — restaurants and shops along Bang Niang Road, sand at the end of the beach road, and the 813 tsunami memorial park on Highway 4. Parent hub is Khao Lak; province context is Phang Nga. Nang Thong Beach stays under the main Khao Lak location rather than a separate village hub.

Swim and walk Bang Niang Beach. Visit Police Boat 813 — the patrol vessel left inland by the 2004 tsunami — then continue to the Tsunami Memorial Sculpture in the same park. For a longer coast day, scooter north toward Cape Pakarang or south to Nang Thong Beach. Similan diving pickups run from hotels across this corridor in dry season.

Where to Stay

Bang Niang has beachfront and near-beach resorts plus guesthouses on the inland road. Inventory overlaps the wider Khao Lak booking pool — compare live rates. Quieter nights than Phuket party strips; expect family and European repeat visitors.

Getting There

Phuket International Airport is the usual gateway (~1.5–2 hours). Songthaews and rented scooters cover hops along Phet Kasem Road between Nang Thong, Bang Niang, and Khuk Khak. The memorial entrance is obvious from the highway “813” sign before the Bang Niang lights.

Best Time to Visit

November–April for swimming and diving logistics. May–October for quieter rates if you accept variable sea conditions and keep the memorial as an all-weather stop.

Practical Tips

ATMs and 7-Elevens sit on or near the highway. Bring sun cover for the unshaded memorial park. English is widely spoken in hotels; market vendors may prefer cash.
