Bottle Beach Viewpoint

Koh Phangan Reviewed Jul 2026

Bottle Beach Viewpoint is a short, steep hike above Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) on Koh Phangan’s north coast — 30 to 60 minutes each way through jungle, ending in a boulder scramble to a panorama over the bay. There’s no entry fee; the only cost is the climb itself.

What to Expect

Two trails run up from Bottle Beach to the headland, both steep and rough underfoot, both finishing with the same rocky scramble for the view. What you get at the top is a wide look over the bay, the beach below, and the forested ridgelines that wrap this quieter stretch of the island’s north coast — there’s no railing, platform, or facilities at the summit, just the rock and the view.

Getting There

The viewpoint has no independent access — you reach it on foot from Bottle Beach itself. Getting to the beach means either a longtail boat from Chaloklum village or a jungle trek across the headland from neighbouring bays. Once on the beach, the trailhead for the viewpoint climb starts from the sand and takes 30-60 minutes depending on which of the two routes you pick and how fit you are for a steep scramble.

Atmosphere and Timing

Sunrise and sunset give the best light for the panorama, though there’s little shade anywhere on the climb, so plan around the heat rather than just the light. The dry season (November-April) keeps the rocky sections manageable; during and after rain, the same boulders become genuinely slippery.

Insider Tip: Bring water you don’t mind carrying uphill — there are no shops, taps, or shade breaks anywhere on either trail, and the boulder scramble at the top needs both hands free.

Watch out: Skip the climb after recent rain. The final approach is a bare-rock scramble, and wet boulders on a headland with no barriers are a real fall risk, not just an inconvenience.

Practical

Key Facts:
  • Entry: Free
  • Climb time: 30-60 minutes each way
  • Terrain: Steep jungle trail, boulder scramble at the top
  • Best months: November-April

Bottle Beach itself, reached via Chaloklum village’s boat pier, is the natural pairing for this hike. See the Koh Phangan guide for the rest of the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the hike to Bottle Beach Viewpoint?
Short but steep — most routes take 30-60 minutes one way, climbing straight up through jungle to a boulder scramble at the summit. It's not technical, but it's not a casual stroll either; wear proper shoes with grip.
How many trails go up to the viewpoint?
Two. Both cover similar steep, rocky terrain and both finish with the same boulder climb for the final view — one is somewhat longer than the other, but neither is an easy walk.
Is the viewpoint free to visit?
Yes — there's no entry fee or gate. The only cost is getting to Bottle Beach itself (by boat from Chaloklum or on foot) and your own time and effort on the climb.
Should I avoid this hike after rain?
Yes — the rocky sections and boulders near the top get slippery when wet, and the trail isn't recommended right after rainfall. Stick to the November-April dry season if you want the safest footing.
What's the difference between Bottle Beach and Bottle Beach Viewpoint?
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is the beach itself, on Koh Phangan's north coast, reachable by boat or jungle trek. The viewpoint is a separate uphill hike starting from the beach, leading to a headland with views over the bay.
