Fahlanna Art Museum

Chiang Mai’s newest museum turns a former tobacco warehouse on Wiang Kaew Road into roughly ten rooms of staged Lanna heritage — real artifacts under projection mapping, laser light and layered sound. Fahlanna Art Museum (FAM) opened on 24 September 2025, built by the family behind Fah Lanna Spa, whose Old City branch sits next door. It’s the Old City’s biggest museum opening in years, and early visitors have had it nearly to themselves.

Inside the rooms

The route starts at a video-mapped portal — the Gate of Dreams — and works through themed halls: spirit and religious tradition, daily-life artifacts around a traditional house, a textile gallery of Northern Thai weaving, a maze of archival black-and-white photographs, and a nostalgia room of the recent Thai past. The set pieces are the crowd-pleasers: a six-sided mirror room lit by LED pillars, and an underwater-themed projection hall where you sink into bean bags while the show plays across floor and walls. The final hall holds a rotating exhibition from the owner’s collection and a shop stocking work by local artisans, including makers with disabilities the museum’s social mission supports. Budget about two hours; the ticket includes a drink at the in-house Fahtara Coffee, which makes a natural halfway stop.

The honest ledger

At 555 THB (down from a 999 THB opening price, as listed in July 2026), this is one of the most expensive museum tickets in Chiang Mai, and it’s spectacle-first — if you want scholarly depth on Lanna history, the displays trade explanation for immersion. Early reviews are strongly positive about the production values and the quiet, uncrowded rooms. One practical wrinkle: it’s new enough that some locals — including drivers — haven’t heard of it yet.

Insider Tip: Tell your driver “Fah Lanna Spa, Wiang Kaew Road” — the spa next door is the landmark everyone knows. The 19:00 close also makes this the rare Chiang Mai museum you can save for late afternoon, when the temples have crowded up and the heat peaks.
