Wat Phu Khao Noi — “the temple of the small mountain” — is the oldest temple on Koh Phangan, believed to date from around 1400, when the island’s first settled monks built here. It’s a compact hilltop temple near Thong Sala: a white central pagoda ringed by eight smaller ones, free to visit, and a quiet 20-minute stop with views over this corner of the island. The Fine Arts Department registered it as a historical site in 1997.
What to see
The layout is the interest — a ten-metre white principal pagoda encircled by eight smaller pagodas on a twelve-cornered base, unusual among the island’s temples. Look for the upside-down ceramic bowls set into the walls, a quirk particular to this site. There’s a small meditation centre in the grounds, and the hilltop setting makes it calm and shaded, with peaceful views out over the trees.
Insider Tip: Come in the morning if you can — the monks are mainly around early, it’s cooler for the short climb, and you’ll likely have the hilltop to yourself. It’s a 20-minute look rather than a half-day, so pair it with something in Thong Sala.
Getting there
It sits on a hill about 10 minutes from Thong Sala, the island’s main town and ferry pier, so it’s easy to fold into a trip through town — a stop by the Phantip night market or the pier’s navy-ship museum sits nearby. Come by scooter or taxi.
Watch out: It’s an active, historic temple, not a tourist showpiece — dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), take off shoes and hat before entering the buildings, and keep your voice down around anyone meditating.
