Wat Mung Muang

Wat Mung Muang, built in 1839 on the main road through old Chiang Saen, is a working Lanna-style temple with free entry daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Chiang Saen was a walled river-port capital of the Lanna kingdom centuries before Chiang Mai eclipsed it, and this temple sits inside that old town, opposite Wat Phra Buat and a short walk from the Ha-Yak Por Khun Mengrai intersection that anchors the area.

Local tradition ties the temple’s name to Phaya Saen Mueang Ma, the seventh king of the Mangrai dynasty, who ruled Lanna from 1385 to 1401 — though, as with much of Chiang Saen’s older temple stock, firm documentary history beyond the 1839 construction date hasn’t survived. What is clear from the building itself is the craftsmanship: multi-tiered teak roofs, carved gables, and a golden-spired chedi mark it as genuine 19th-century Lanna temple-building rather than a modern reconstruction.

Insider Tip: Chiang Saen’s old-town temple cluster is walkable end to end in under two hours. Pair Wat Mung Muang with Wat Phra Buat directly across the road and the ruins at Wat Pa Sak a few minutes further on, rather than driving between them.

Inside, gilded Buddha images sit beneath the original carved-wood roof structure. A handful of local devotees make merit here most mornings; there’s rarely a crowd, and none of the paid-photo-op setups you’ll find at Chiang Rai’s bigger temple attractions. The upkeep reflects a temple serving its own neighbourhood, not one performing for tour buses.

Watch out: Chiang Saen’s temples keep more modest hours than Chiang Rai city’s headline attractions — most close by late afternoon. Don’t leave this for the tail end of a day trip; Chiang Rai city is about an hour’s drive away.

Combine a Chiang Saen temple walk with the hilltop views at Phra That Doi Pu Khao or the Golden Triangle riverfront, both a short drive from the old town.
