Phra That Doi Pu Khao is a ruined hilltop temple on the edge of Chiang Saen, in Chiang Rai province, overlooking the Mekong River a few kilometres from the Golden Triangle confluence. Entry is free, the site is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00, and what survives today is a partially rebuilt viharn, a weathered chedi, and the remains of five smaller satellite chedis grouped around it.

Local legend credits an 8th-century king of the old Wiang Hirannakhon Ngoen Yang kingdom with founding the site; archaeologists date the standing chedi remains to around the 14th century, during the Chiang Saen period. Either way, this is one of the older religious sites in the area, and it shows — the main chedi is crumbled rather than gilded and restored, more ruin than working temple. A naga-flanked staircase climbs the first stretch of the hill to a newer viharn; from there, an informal path continues up to the chedi ruins themselves.

Watch out: There’s little shade on the upper path, and the stone steps get slippery when wet. Skip the climb during or right after rain unless you’ve got good grip on your shoes.

The payoff for the climb is the view: the Mekong curling below, the Golden Triangle confluence where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet, and open countryside stretching into both neighbouring countries on a clear day. It’s a quieter, less commercial vantage point than the official Golden Triangle viewpoint a short drive away, with none of the souvenir stalls or tour-bus crowds.

Insider Tip: Visit late afternoon rather than midday — the light across the river valley is better for photos, and the heat on the exposed staircase is far more manageable.

There’s no dress code enforcement here in the way there is at active working temples, but covering shoulders and knees is still respectful given this remains a Buddhist religious site. No food or drink vendors operate on site, so bring water, particularly in the hot season between March and May.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Phra That Doi Pu Khao the same as the Golden Triangle viewpoint?
It's a separate, older site — a hilltop temple ruin on the edge of Chiang Saen town, a short drive from the Golden Triangle confluence itself. Both share views over the Mekong, but Doi Pu Khao is the quieter, historic option.
How old is the temple?
Sources disagree — local legend dates the original structure to the 8th century, while archaeologists place the surviving chedi and viharn remains closer to the 14th century, in the Chiang Saen kingdom era.
Is there an entrance fee?
No, entry is free and the site is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.
How hard is the climb up?
A naga-lined staircase covers roughly the first half of the ascent to a rebuilt viharn; the path beyond to the chedi ruins is a shorter, less formal walk. Comfortable shoes are enough — it's not a technical hike.
What can you see from the top?
On a clear day the Mekong River, the Golden Triangle confluence, and land across the water in Myanmar and Laos are all visible from the hilltop.
