3-in-1: Doi Inthanon Tour, Elephant Sanctuary, and Trekking Trail
Availability checked
Doi Inthanon is the highest point in Thailand — 2,565 metres — and the summit itself is a bit of an anticlimax (a small marker, often in cloud). The real draw of the park is what surrounds it: the twin royal pagodas, the Hmong villages growing coffee and strawberries on the lower slopes, and the Pha Dok Siew nature trail through the cloud forest. This day out of Chiang Mai stitches the park together with a visit to an ethical elephant sanctuary on the way up.
The day starts with the Living Green Elephant Sanctuary, a no-ride operation where elephants live in a forested enclosure and you watch them feed and bathe rather than interact directly. From there it’s up the mountain to Doi Inthanon’s summit, the King and Queen pagodas (built for Their Majesties’ 60th birthdays, with views down over the Chom Thong valley), and a stop at a local Hmong village to see the agriculture and taste the hill-farm coffee. The Pha Dok Siew trail comes later — a guided walk through forest and past the waterfall that gives the route its name, with a local guide from the village explaining the plants and the Royal Project’s reforestation work. Lunch is a Thai meal at a local restaurant on the mountain. Bottled water, air-conditioned transport, insurance, and the English-speaking guide are included.
Ten to twelve hours, moderate difficulty, up to 15 people. The Pha Dok Siew trail is the physical part — not a serious hike, but proper shoes beat flip-flops. National park and King and Queen Pagoda entrance fees aren’t in the price and are collected on the day. The summit sits well above 2,000 metres and is noticeably cooler than Chiang Mai — bring a light layer even in April.
Cool season (November to February) is the sweet spot. December to January brings cherry blossom-like sakura blooms on the lower slopes.
