Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong

According to the Yonok Chronicle, the golden chedi on Doi Chom Thong was first raised around 940 CE, centuries before Chiang Rai existed as a city. When King Mangrai surveyed the region around 1262, he judged the hill a fitting site for his new capital and had the older chedi restored as part of founding the city. That layered history — a pre-existing shrine absorbed into a new city’s foundation myth — is why the temple still functions as Chiang Rai’s spiritual anchor point today, rather than just another hilltop wat.

The chedi itself stands about 14 metres tall, blending Lanna and older Burmese-influenced (Bu-kam) styling, its lotus-petal base, bell and spire gilded in gold leaf. In 1992, the city’s official pillar was moved here from Wat Klang Wiang and installed as Sadue Mueang — the “navel of the city” — inside a shrine built in 1987 to mark King Bhumibol’s 60th birthday and Chiang Rai’s 725th anniversary, its main pillar ringed by 108 smaller ones in a Khmer-influenced style. That civic role, layered on top of the older Buddhist site, is what makes the hill genuinely significant rather than a generic temple viewpoint.

Insider Tip: Most visitors head straight for Wat Rong Khun or the Chiang Rai walking street and skip this one entirely. Come in the late afternoon instead — the hill catches the light over the Kok River valley with almost nobody else around.

Being the city’s high point, the temple grounds open onto a view over Chiang Rai’s rooftops toward the surrounding hills, with the Kok River tracing a line through the valley below. The main viharn houses Buddha images venerated by locals rather than tour groups, and the pillar shrine draws a steady trickle of Chiang Rai residents making merit rather than travelers working through a checklist. It functions as a working part of city life more than as a photo stop.

Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees — and remove your shoes before entering any building. There’s no dress-code rental at the gate, so bring your own layer if you’re not already covered. The short climb to the chedi and pillar shrine has little shade, so carry water if you’re visiting at midday; early morning or the hour before sunset is more comfortable and better for photos.
