Diving & Snorkeling in Thailand
55 tours across 12 destinations
Thailand is where many divers get certified. Koh Tao issues more PADI Open Water certifications than anywhere else on earth — calm bays, cheap accommodation, and dive schools that have been running multi-day courses since the 1980s. Open Water courses run 3-4 days for around $350-450 all-in. For certified divers, the Similan Islands (November-April only) rival anywhere in Southeast Asia for visibility and big pelagics. Phuket and Koh Lanta both launch day trips to Phi Phi, Koh Haa, and Hin Daeng. Sail Rock off Koh Phangan is the Gulf of Thailand's signature pinnacle dive.

Diving & Snorkeling in Thailand — FAQ
Do I need a diving certification?
For "Discover Scuba" intro dives, no — any healthy adult can do a supervised single dive in shallow water after a briefing. For deeper or multi-dive days, you need at least Open Water certification. Show your C-card (physical or digital) at check-in.
How long does a PADI Open Water course take?
Three to four days, usually $350-450 including manual, rental gear, and 4 training dives. Koh Tao and Koh Lanta have the most competitive pricing. The course covers theory (quiz and exam), confined-water skills (swimming pool), and open-water dives.
When are the Similan Islands open?
Mid-November to mid-April. The Similans close every monsoon season to protect marine life. Outside these dates, Richelieu Rock and Koh Bon are also closed. For April-October diving, head to Koh Tao or the Gulf.
Are liveaboards worth it over day trips?
For experienced divers who want remote sites (Similan 9, Koh Bon, Richelieu), yes — liveaboards visit 3-4 dive sites per day and unlock the outer islands. For beginners or casual divers, 1-2 day trips from Khao Lak or Phuket are plenty.
