Old Big Gun Museum

Bangkok’s Old Big Gun Museum isn’t an indoor museum at all — it’s an open-air row of roughly 40 antique cannons lined up on the lawn in front of the old Ministry of Defence building on Sanam Chai Road, viewable free from the pavement or the grounds themselves. The name oversells the format: there’s no ticket booth, no galleries, and nothing to walk into. What you get is a well-kept outdoor artillery display, not a curated indoor exhibition.

The cannons date from the late Ayutthaya period through early Rattanakosin, cast mostly in bronze that has weathered to a green verdigris, mounted on red-painted plinths. Several are of French origin, a reminder of Thailand’s 19th-century arms trade with European powers, and a handful carry individual names still legible on their barrels — among them a cannon known as Naraisangharn and another called Phya Thanee. Each piece carries a plaque with basic identifying details, though don’t expect the depth of interpretation you’d find in a staffed military museum — this reads more as a dignified outdoor garden of retired ordnance than a narrated history.

The building behind the cannons is worth a glance in its own right: the old Ministry of Defence hall is painted yellow with white trim and green-shuttered windows, a colonial-era civic style that matches several other government buildings around Sanam Luang. The grounds are kept tidy — mown grass, painted plinths, no litter or clutter — which is part of why the display reads as respectful rather than derelict, even without an admission fee or staff on site.

Insider Tip: It’s open daily from around 08:00 to 18:00 and works best as a five-minute detour on the way between the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang rather than a dedicated trip.

Watch out: don’t plan around finding an entrance or ticket counter — the display faces the street and the Ministry of Defence grounds, so you’re viewing it much as you would a public monument rather than entering a building.

It sits close enough to Bangkok’s biggest sights to fold into the same walk — the Grand Palace is directly opposite, and the Bangkok City Pillar Shrine is a few minutes on foot.
