The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) is Bangkok’s main contemporary art venue — a nine-storey building on Rama I Road, opposite MBK and Siam and linked straight to BTS National Stadium by a skywalk. Entry is free, it’s open Tuesday to Sunday (10:00–20:00, closed Mondays), and it shows both international exhibitions and emerging Thai artists. Opened in 2008 after a public campaign saved the site from becoming another mall, it’s one of the most accessible cultural stops in the city.

What to see

The main galleries occupy the upper floors, roughly levels seven to nine, with rotating shows of painting, sculpture, photography, design and multimedia — the programme changes regularly, so it’s worth checking what’s on before you go. The building curls around a bright white spiral atrium, and the lower floors are given over to independent design shops, art bookshops, cafés and an art library. Talks, film screenings and workshops run through the calendar too.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday morning or early afternoon for the quietest galleries — it fills up with an after-work and student crowd later on. Check the current exhibition listing first; the headline shows on the top floors are what make a visit, and they rotate.

Practical notes

It couldn’t be easier to reach — step off at BTS National Stadium and walk across the skywalk into the building. Free admission (a few special exhibitions aside), an hour or two to look round, and the whole Siam/MBK shopping district on the doorstep if you want to combine it.

Watch out: It’s closed Mondays, and photography rules vary by exhibition, so check the signage before shooting. The air-conditioning is fierce — a light layer helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BACC free to enter?
Yes — general admission is free. Some special or touring exhibitions may charge, but the main galleries and public spaces are free. It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00, and closed Mondays.
What's on show?
Rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, design, photography and multimedia by both Thai and international artists, spread across the upper-floor galleries (roughly levels 7–9). Programming also includes film screenings, talks, workshops and performances.
How do you get there?
It's directly linked to BTS National Stadium station by a skywalk, opposite the MBK and Siam shopping areas in Pathum Wan — one of the easiest attractions in Bangkok to reach by train.
What else is in the building?
The lower floors, wrapped around a bright spiral atrium, hold independent design shops, art bookshops, cafés and an art library — so it works as a browse-and-coffee stop even between exhibitions.
How long should I allow?
An hour or two, depending on what's showing. It pairs easily with the Siam/MBK shopping district right outside, and the strong air-conditioning makes it a good midday escape from the heat.
