Bangkok’s Butterfly Garden and Insectarium sits inside Vachirabenjatas Park — known locally as Rot Fai Park — next to, not inside, Chatuchak Park. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration opened it in 2005 to give the city a nature-education centre within the Chatuchak green-space cluster, and it remains one of the few places in central Bangkok to see live tropical butterflies up close, for free.

The layout runs in four parts. An entrance area uses touchscreens to introduce the site; a small theatre plays short videos on insects and their ecological role; an exhibition room displays specimens alongside a working rearing area where you can see caterpillars and pupae at different stages; and the main attraction, a large domed greenhouse, holds roughly 20 butterfly species and more than 500 live butterflies feeding and flying among tropical plants.

Insider Tip: Morning visits, soon after the 08:30 opening, see the most butterfly activity — they’re more active while it’s still cool, before the dome heats up through the day.

The facility is compact and unhurried rather than a major attraction in its own right — a 45-minute to hour-long stop rather than a half-day outing. It pairs naturally with the wider park: Rot Fai Park’s cycling paths and shaded lawns sit right outside, and Chatuchak Park’s own trails are a short walk further on, making the butterfly dome a good add-on to a morning in the park cluster rather than a standalone trip.

Watch out: It’s closed on Mondays, which trips up visitors planning around the neighbouring Chatuchak Weekend Market — the market only runs Saturday and Sunday anyway, so the two rarely line up on the same visit.

Key Facts:
  • Entry: Free
  • Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 08:30-16:30 (closed Mondays)
  • Location: Vachirabenjatas Park (Rot Fai Park), Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road, Chatuchak
  • Opened: 2005, run by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration
  • What’s inside: Touchscreen intro, mini-theatre, exhibition room, and a dome with ~20 species and 500+ live butterflies

Combine it with Chatuchak Park next door for a longer morning outdoors, or time a weekend trip around Chatuchak Weekend Market if shopping is also on the list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium free?
Yes, entry is free. It's a Bangkok Metropolitan Administration facility, open Tuesday to Sunday from 08:30 to 16:30, closed Mondays.
Where exactly is it — is it part of Chatuchak Park?
It's inside Vachirabenjatas Park (also called Rot Fai Park, or Suan Rot Fai), which sits alongside Chatuchak Park rather than inside it. The two parks are adjoining and often confused, but they have separate entrances off Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road.
What's inside?
A four-part layout — a touchscreen introduction area, a mini-theatre showing videos on insects and ecosystems, an exhibition room with a butterfly and insect rearing display, and a large dome housing around 20 butterfly species and 500-plus live butterflies.
How long should I plan for a visit?
45 minutes to an hour covers the dome and exhibits comfortably; add more if you're cycling or walking the wider Rot Fai Park before or after.
How do I get there?
MRT to Kamphaeng Phet or Chatuchak Park station, then a short walk along Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road to the Vachirabenjatas Park entrance.
