Also known as: Bo Phut Beach, Hat Bo Phut, Bophut Beach, Bo Phut Bay
Hat Bophut curves for roughly three kilometres along the north coast of Koh Samui, facing across the Gulf of Thailand towards Koh Phangan. It sits between Mae Nam to the west and Bang Rak to the east, about five kilometres from Samui International Airport. The beach is notably quieter than Chaweng — fewer beach clubs, lower noise levels — and the resort strip is more upscale, drawing couples and older travellers rather than the party crowd.
The sand is coarser and darker than the white powder on Koh Samui’s south-east coast, and the water can be murky close to Fisherman’s Village, particularly during the wet season. Multiple visitor accounts flag the sea as poor for snorkelling and variable for swimming; the beach works better as a place to sit and look at Koh Phangan on the horizon than as an all-day swim spot. Jet skis are active through the mid-morning and afternoon and generate persistent engine noise from the eastern section of the bay.
The real draw is the Fisherman’s Village (Ban Bophut), a cluster of century-old Thai-Chinese shophouses converted into restaurants, boutique shops, and coffee places. Every Friday from around 5 pm to 11 pm the main beachfront road closes to traffic and becomes Koh Samui’s largest weekly walking street market, with food stalls, live music, and fire performers. Arrive by 5 pm for elbow room; the narrow lane becomes genuinely packed by 7 pm. Notable restaurants year-round include 2 Fishes (Italian and seafood), Coco Tam’s (beachfront cocktails), and Krua Bophut for traditional Thai food on the sand.
Insider Tip: If you are visiting on a non-Friday, the village is far more pleasant in the morning — cafés open from around 8 am, fishing boats are still active on the beach, and you can walk the entire length in shade before the afternoon heat.
Watch out: Box jellyfish are present on this stretch of the north coast from May through October, with August carrying the highest risk. Scan the water before entering and pay attention to any warning signs posted by resorts.
