Ao Nam Mao
Quiet beach area with local seafood restaurants and easy access to islands.
Ao Nam Mao is a quiet bay 20 minutes west of Ao Nang in Krabi province. While most visitors pass through on their way to the pier for island day trips, the area has its own stretch of mangrove-backed beach and a handful of resorts that suit travellers wanting Krabi’s scenery without Ao Nang’s tourist density.
What to Do
The main pier at Ao Nam Mao is a departure point for longtail boats to Railay, Phra Nang, and the four islands. Kayaking through the mangroves at nearby Ao Thalane is one of Krabi’s best half-day activities — gliding through limestone tunnels and quiet channels. The beach itself is narrow and tidal but peaceful.
The area’s standout attraction is the 75 Million-year-old Shell Cemetery (Susan Hoi), a geological site where fossilised freshwater shells have been compressed into flat limestone slabs over 75 million years. It’s one of only three sites like it in the world — the others are in the US and Japan. The formations stretch along the shoreline and entry is free, open daily 08:00-17:00. Best visited in the morning before the heat picks up; the rocks get slippery when wet, so wear grippy shoes.
Horseback riding along the beach is another option here — local operators run 1-2 hour rides with hotel pickup, suitable for beginners. The route follows the waterline and loops through farmland behind the coast.
Best Time to Visit
November to March is peak season with calm seas and dry weather. The bay faces east so mornings are best for light and cooler temperatures. During the wet season (May-October), some boat services to Railay reduce frequency and the beach can collect debris, but the area is still accessible.
Where to Stay
Accommodation around Ao Nam Mao is limited to a handful of mid-range resorts and guesthouses — no hostels or big chain hotels. Prices run 30-50% lower than equivalent rooms in Ao Nang, and most properties have pools and sea views. A motorbike or car is essential if you stay here, as shops and restaurants are spread along the coast road rather than concentrated in a walkable centre.
Getting There
Songthaews and taxis from Krabi Town (20 minutes) or Ao Nang (15 minutes). Having your own transport is useful as the area is spread out along the coast road.
Insider Tip: Use Ao Nam Mao pier instead of Ao Nang pier for longtails to Railay — same destination, shorter queue, and the boatmen are more willing to negotiate.
