Also known as: Chaweng Beach, Hat Chaweng Beach, Chaweng, North Chaweng, Central Chaweng, Chaweng Noi
Hat Chaweng is the longest beach on Koh Samui’s east coast — roughly 7 kilometres of white sand running from a quiet northern headland down through Central Chaweng to the smaller Chaweng Noi cove in the south. The island’s tourist development took off after Samui Airport opened in 1989, and the infrastructure shows: Central Chaweng is wall-to-wall sunbeds (100–200 THB per day), beach bars, and water-sports touts from dawn until well after dark.
The beach divides neatly into three zones. North Chaweng is the widest and least commercialised section, with an offshore reef that breaks incoming swells and keeps the water relatively calm. Central Chaweng is the engine of Koh Samui’s tourist economy — jets skis, parasailing, and a beachfront road lined with restaurants, massage parlours, and shops. Soi Green Mango, just back from the sand, is the main nightlife alley; clubs run from around 10 pm into the early hours — some, like Green Mango, until close to dawn — and the noise carries to nearby accommodation. Chaweng Noi, around a low headland to the south, is quieter and more upscale, with clearer water and less footfall.
The east coast faces the Gulf of Thailand, so the dry season (December to April) brings flat, clear seas and peak prices. From around October to December, the monsoon brings rough surf, strong rip currents, and reduced visibility — swimming is inadvisable during bad spells. Box jellyfish have been recorded at Chaweng year-round, with higher incidence during wetter months; vinegar stands are sited along the beach, and wearing a lycra rash guard significantly reduces sting risk.
Insider Tip: For the quietest stretch of sand closest to the nightlife, walk north from the central strip past the last cluster of beach bars — North Chaweng empties out quickly and the reef keeps the water calmer than anywhere else on the beach.
Watch out: Box jellyfish are a genuine hazard, not a theoretical one. Documented stings have put swimmers in hospital. Heed any warning signs posted by the beach patrol, and avoid swimming at night or immediately after heavy rain.
