Daily — open early for sunrise
Entry Free

Phu Chi Fa is the sea-of-mist sunrise viewpoint of Chiang Rai — a cliff-top ridge on the Laos border where, at dawn in the cool season, fog pools in the valley below while the sun rises over the mountains of Laos. It stands around 1,628 metres, entry isn’t currently charged, and reaching the viewpoint is a short 20–30 minute climb from the car park. It’s a cool-season pilgrimage for Thai and foreign visitors alike.

The sunrise

The whole trip is built around one moment: standing on the grassy ridge as the light comes up and the “thale mok” (sea of mist) glows below the cliff. The peak juts out toward Laos, so you’re looking east over a soft ocean of cloud with the sunrise behind it. By mid-morning the mist burns off and the magic is gone — which is why everyone is up in the dark. On top, a short grassland ridge runs along the cliff edge; in December and January cherry blossom and wildflowers add colour.

Insider Tip: Stay the night at the mountain’s base and be at the car park by around 5:45am. Take a head-torch for the dark climb and a warm layer — at this altitude in the cool season it’s genuinely cold before dawn, and the wind on the ridge bites.

Getting there and when to go

Phu Chi Fa is about 90 km from Chiang Rai city — a 2–3 hour drive into the far east of the province — so almost everyone overnights nearby rather than day-tripping. Go in the cool, dry season (November–February) for clear skies and reliable mist; outside those months the sea of mist is hit-or-miss. There’s parking and basic facilities at the base.

Watch out: The cliff edge is exposed and unfenced in places, and it’s dark and crowded before sunrise — mind your footing and keep children close. Weekends and the December–January peak get very busy.
