Ao Mahachai Mangrove Forest Study Centre
ศูนย์ศึกษาธรรมชาติป่าชายเลนอ่าวมหาชัย
Also known as: Ao Mahachai Mangrove Forest Natural Education Center
About 40 kilometres southwest of Bangkok, the Ao Mahachai Mangrove Forest Study Centre protects one of the inner Gulf of Thailand’s most ecologically important coastal wetlands, where the Tha Chin River meets tidal flats that support a dense web of marine and bird life in Samut Sakhon. Admission is free, and the centre is open daily from 08:30 to 17:30.
A 1.5-kilometre wooden boardwalk — with two small suspension bridges — threads through mangrove tunnels, bringing visitors close to prop roots arching over brackish water. Mudskippers dart across exposed mudflats at low tide, and fiddler crabs move between the root systems below the walkway. An observation tower near the trail end gives an elevated view across the canopy, useful for scanning nesting activity and tracking tidal changes through the forest.
The site sits within one of Southeast Asia’s most significant shorebird flyway zones. From October through April, the inner Gulf mudflats and mangroves attract substantial numbers of migratory waders — including the critically endangered spoon-billed sandpiper — alongside resident kingfishers, herons and egrets. Bird activity peaks before 10:00, when the heat is still manageable.
Educational panels along the trail cover mangrove ecology, coastal carbon storage, and the role of these forests as natural flood barriers. Basic restroom facilities are on site. Sturdy, closed-toe footwear is advisable after rain, when the boardwalk turns slippery. Private transport is the most practical way to reach the centre, as public connections are limited.
