Aranyaprathet Victory Gate
ประตูชัยอรัญประเทศ
Two hexagonal concrete watchtowers face each other across the road into Ban Khlong Luek, Thailand’s main border crossing into Cambodia at Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo. Built in 1939, they commemorate the Thai soldiers who held this stretch of frontier during that year’s border clashes with French Indochina. The left tower keeps its wartime damage unrepaired; the right carries a marble plaque inscribed with the national anthem. Entry is free and the memorial is viewable daily from roughly 05:00 to 21:00 — no passport or documentation needed, since this is a war memorial standing beside the border rather than the working immigration post itself.
The site is compact: two towers and their inscriptions, with the immigration post and Rong Kluea border market a short distance beyond. There’s no museum or visitor centre attached, so most people spend 10-15 minutes reading the plaques and taking photos before moving on to Aranyaprathet town or the Sa Kaeo attractions further inland, such as the Khmer ruins at Prasat Sadok Kok Thom.
Watch out: Don’t plan on crossing into Cambodia here without checking the current situation first. Following the 2025 Thailand–Cambodia border conflict, the Ban Khlong Luek checkpoint has opened, closed, and changed its hours repeatedly through 2026 — shortened opening times (around 08:00–16:00, down from a pre-conflict 06:00–22:00) and, at various points, restrictions limiting movement to humanitarian cases such as returning migrant workers rather than ordinary tourist or trade traffic. The cross-border trading bustle the area is known for historically is much reduced while these restrictions remain in force.
- Built: 1939, commemorating Thai soldiers in that year’s border clashes with French Indochina
- Entry: Free, daily roughly 05:00–21:00
- Border crossing status: Ban Khlong Luek next door runs restricted hours and limited access following the 2025 conflict — verify before planning any crossing
- Getting there: Bus from Bangkok’s Mo Chit terminal, or train to Aranyaprathet station, then a short tuk-tuk ride
- Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Getting there is straightforward regardless of the border situation: buses run from Bangkok’s Mo Chit terminal to Aranyaprathet, and the train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong line terminates at Aranyaprathet station, a short tuk-tuk ride from the gate. Because the surrounding border trade has quietened since the 2025 closures, the memorial itself — rather than the frontier commerce around it — is now the main reason to stop here.
