Ban Bakan Yai
Ban Bakan Yai is a small Malay Muslim fishing village on a tidal island in Ko Sarai subdistrict, about 30 minutes by longtail boat from Thung Rin Pier on the Satun mainland. The village sits above shallow Andaman waters on wooden stilts, and families here have fished the same grounds for generations. The community runs a homestay programme — overnight stays including three meals and the boat transfer cost around 1,000 baht per person — making it one of the more accessible community-tourism experiences in Satun province.
Wooden walkways connect the stilt houses and give visitors a chance to watch fishermen sorting nets and preparing boats before heading out. At low tide a sandbar called San Laeng Mangkon rises from the sea nearby; a short additional longtail hop takes visitors to Sala Muek, where local families operate squid-farming cages. Both are practical reasons to stay overnight rather than rushing a day trip.
Because Ban Bakan Yai is an active Muslim residential community, alcohol is not permitted. Dress modestly and ask before photographing residents. Arrange the boat transfer in advance by calling the homestay on 081-541-9448 or 089-659-7194. The village has no fixed admission charge; entry is free for those who are not staying overnight.
