Ban Khun Amphai Phanit
Ban Khun Amphai Phanit is a preserved merchant’s residence in the centre of Si Sa Ket, built in 1925 for a local nobleman and trader of that name. Raised by Chinese and Mon craftsmen and decorated with Chinese-style stucco, the house is one of the town’s finest pieces of early-20th-century domestic architecture and is registered as an ancient building by the Fine Arts Department.
The timber-and-masonry house blends Chinese and Mon detailing, from its layout to the moulded ornament around its doors and eaves, and it earned a national gold medal for urban architectural conservation in 1988. Today it doubles as a small heritage attraction and souvenir shop, so visitors can look over the building and its fittings while browsing local crafts and keepsakes. Displays on the family and the house’s restoration help explain why it was singled out for preservation.
The house sits in Mueang Si Sa Ket, an easy stop while exploring the town by tuk-tuk or private vehicle. Modest clothing and comfortable shoes are sensible for wandering the rooms, and asking before photographing the interiors is appreciated. For travellers interested in Thailand’s trading history and conservation architecture, it is a quiet, free detour that rewards a short visit.
