Erawan Cave sits on a low hill in Nakhon Chedi subdistrict, Pa Sang district, Lamphun — not to be confused with the much better-known Erawan Cave and its giant Buddha entrance in Nong Bua Lamphu, several hundred kilometres north-east. This one is a small limestone cave managed by the local forest protection unit, open daily 08:30-16:30, free to enter.

The cave mouth looks like a large sinkhole dropping into the hillside, with a walking trail running about 300 metres in before doubling back the way you came — there’s no loop and no through-route. There’s no fixed lighting, so bring your own flashlight, and going with forest-unit staff or a local guide is worth doing since the path isn’t signposted the whole way. The best stalactite and stalagmite formations, with visible mineral crystals catching torchlight, sit around the trail’s midpoint. At the cave mouth stands a large seated Buddha image, Luang Pho Phra Phuttha Chai Si Muni Si Lokkanat, regarded locally as a guardian figure for the area — the closest thing here to the religious-site character the name might suggest.

This isn’t a polished show cave. The ground is uneven natural rock, some passages need ducking through, and the air is cool and still rather than lit for photography. That’s the honest trade-off for having the place largely to yourself — it draws local visitors and the occasional passing traveller rather than tour buses. Luang Pha Viang Cave, also in Lamphun, is a similar low-key option if you want to see more than one cave in the province.

The cave sits within a national forest reserve overseen by the Lamphun Forest Protection Unit, whose staff maintain the access road and can point you to the trail’s start near their sub-station. The surrounding hills are mostly deciduous dipterocarp forest — dry, open woodland rather than dense jungle — which means the drive in offers decent views once you’re past the paved section. There’s no crowd management to speak of because there’s rarely a crowd: this suits a traveller basing themselves in Lamphun or nearby Chiang Mai for a half-day out of the usual temple circuit, not someone working through a tight itinerary.

Watch out: The access road turns from paved to gravel/dirt for the final 7 km. It’s manageable in a normal car in dry weather but gets rutted and slick after rain — a motorbike or a vehicle with decent clearance is the safer bet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the famous Erawan Cave with the giant Buddha entrance?
No — that well-known Erawan Cave is in Nong Bua Lamphu province, several hundred kilometres away. This is a separate, much smaller cave in Pa Sang district, Lamphun, under the care of the local forest protection unit.
Do I need a guide or a flashlight?
Bring your own flashlight — there's no fixed lighting inside. Going with the forest unit staff or a local guide is recommended since the trail isn't signposted throughout.
How long is the cave trail?
About 300 metres in, then back out the same way. The best stalactite and stalagmite formations are around the trail's midpoint.
Is there a Buddha image at the cave?
Yes — a large seated Buddha image known locally as Luang Pho Phra Phuttha Chai Si Muni Si Lokkanat sits at the cave mouth and is treated as a protective image for the surrounding community.
How do I get there?
From Highway 106 near the km 124 marker, turn onto a paved road for about 4 km, then an unpaved forest road for a further 7 km. The last stretch is rough — a car with reasonable ground clearance helps, and it's best avoided just after heavy rain.
