Luang Pha Wiang Cave (Tham Luang Pha Wiang) cuts deep into a limestone hill in Pa Phlu subdistrict, Ban Hong district — about 57km south of Lamphun town, in the part of the province furthest from the provincial center. A carved naga guards the entrance, and inside, the cave splits into nine named chambers strung along a single passage that runs far back into the mountain.

The formations give the cave its name: local elders describe the folded stalactite curtains near the entrance as resembling the drapes of a stateroom, and the largest chamber, Lan Rom Manee, opens into a wide hall hung with columns built up over centuries of dripping mineral water. A short, roughly 15-minute uphill walk gets you from the car park to the cave mouth — not difficult, but enough of a climb to want proper shoes. Entry is free, though a donation box near the entrance funds the electric lighting; if it’s switched off when you arrive, the resident monks will usually turn it on for a small contribution. Bring a torch regardless — the rear chambers aren’t wired, and that’s also where most of the cave’s bat colony roosts.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for a weekday morning, when monks are around and the lights are more likely already on, rather than counting on someone switching them on for you — the walk to the back chambers is genuinely dark without them.

Four smaller caves sit nearby — Kang Chang, Pha Keun, and the Kor Koi caves among them — used today mainly as meditation spots for visiting monks rather than as separate tourist stops. The wider site trades the crowds of Chiang Mai’s better-known caves for something quieter: on a weekday you may have the main chamber to yourself, with only dripping water and bat calls for company.

Watch out: The rear sections have uneven, sometimes damp footing beyond the lit walkways — go slow, and skip that part if you’re not comfortable navigating by torchlight.

The cave stays cool year-round, a genuine break from Lamphun’s heat outside — bring a light layer for the temperature drop once you’re inside. Ban Hong district has limited public transport, so a car or motorbike from Lamphun town is the practical way to reach it. Allow the better part of a day if you’re combining it with other Ban Hong sites like Wat Phra Chao Ton Luang or Wat Phra Chao Saliem Wan nearby.
