Hat Hin Ngam — “Beautiful Stone Beach” — is a pebble shoreline on the Gulf of Thailand in Sichon district, about 2.2 km from Sichon town in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. There’s no sand here: the beach is covered in smooth, rounded stones in shades of grey, ochre, and green, tumbled into that shape by wave action over a long stretch of time. Entry is free.

The rocky shoreline gives the water a distinctive edge — a slight drop-off begins close to shore rather than the gentle sandy shelf typical of Thailand’s beach resorts, so swimming conditions favour calmer days. Basic amenities line the beach: changing cabins, showers, a handful of beach bars, and toilets. Coconut palms shade sections of the shore, and small fishing boats work the water offshore, keeping this a working coastline rather than a resort strip. Waves rolling over the stones make a rattling sound that’s distinct from the usual wash of surf on sand.

Watch out: Don’t confuse this with Koh Hin Ngam near Koh Lipe in Satun — a similarly named but completely different black-pebble islet on the Andaman side, inside Mu Ko Tarutao National Park. They share a name and a stone theme, nothing else.

Hat Hin Ngam sees far fewer visitors than Nakhon Si Thammarat’s better-known beaches, and it stays that way largely because there’s no sand to draw the usual beach crowd. Thai families use it for weekend outings, and paddleboarding is a common activity when conditions allow.

Insider Tip: Wear water shoes or sandals with grip — the stones get slick when wet, and bare feet are uncomfortable on the drier ones too.

Key Facts:
  • Entry: Free
  • Coast: Gulf of Thailand
  • Distance from Sichon town: About 2.2 km
  • Best time: December–April (dry season)
  • Amenities: Changing cabins, showers, toilets, beach bars

The beach sits close enough to Hat Sichon that the two are easy to combine — sand at one, stones at the other, both within a few minutes’ drive of Sichon town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hat Hin Ngam on the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea?
The Gulf of Thailand. Nakhon Si Thammarat's coastline faces the Gulf side of the peninsula, not the Andaman side where Phuket and Krabi sit.
Is this the same place as Koh Hin Ngam near Koh Lipe?
No — different beach entirely, despite the near-identical name. Koh Hin Ngam (Ko Hin-ngam) is a small black-pebble islet inside Mu Ko Tarutao National Park off Koh Lipe, on the Andaman side in Satun province, hundreds of kilometres from Sichon.
Is there an entry fee?
No, entry is free.
How far is Hat Hin Ngam from Sichon town?
About 2.2 km, on local roads.
What's the best time to visit?
The dry season from December to April brings calmer seas and less rain than the wetter months, making footing on the pebbles easier.
