Hup Pa Tat — also written Hoop Pha Thad — is one of Uthai Thani’s most unusual natural sites: a hidden valley sunk into the limestone hills of Lan Sak district in Uthai Thani. It formed when the roof of an ancient cave collapsed, leaving a steep-walled basin cut off from the land around it. The only way in is on foot through a cave tunnel, opened up in 1979 by a local abbot who found the valley behind it.

Inside, the isolation and filtered light have preserved plants that are scarce elsewhere — groves of tall Tat palms (Arenga westerhoutii), which give the valley its name, and prehistoric-looking ferns more typical of a far older Thailand. The effect has earned it the nickname “Thai Jurassic Park”. A walking trail and boardwalk loop the valley floor through the forest.

The site sits within the Tham Prathun Non-Hunting Area, and the walk is short and shaded rather than strenuous. It stays quiet and low-key, with the cave entrance, the palms and the enclosed valley making up the whole of the experience — there are no concessions inside. Light through the cave mouth and canopy in the morning is the best time for photographs.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: 200 THB / 100 THB child (foreigners), 20 THB / 10 THB child (Thai nationals)
  • Hours: Daily 08:30-16:30
  • Getting there: By road from Lan Sak, about an hour from Uthai Thani town
  • What to bring: A torch for the tunnel, sturdy shoes for the damp trail
  • Nearby: Tham Prathun Non-Hunting Area and the wider Lan Sak cave district

Insider Tip: Go in the morning — light angling through the cave mouth and canopy gives the best photos of the palms, and the valley floor stays cooler before midday.

Watch out: The only way in is through the dark cave tunnel; it’s a short walk but genuinely unlit, so don’t rely on a phone torch alone if the battery’s low.

Hup Pa Tat is reached by road from Lan Sak, around an hour from Uthai Thani town and easiest with your own transport. It combines naturally with Thap Salao Dam and the Namtok Tat Dao waterfall on a day trip through western Uthai Thani.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to visit Hup Pa Tat?
200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB for children), 20 THB for Thai adults (10 THB for children). Tickets are sold at the entrance booth near the cave-tunnel entrance.
Why is it called "Thai Jurassic Park"?
The isolated valley shelters tall Tat palms (Arenga westerhoutii) and primitive-looking ferns that thrive in the filtered light and constant humidity trapped inside the collapsed cave — plants that look and feel older than the forest outside.
How do you actually get into the valley?
Through a natural cave tunnel that was opened up in 1979 by a local abbot who found the enclosed valley on the other side. It's the only way in — there's no other entrance or trail around the rim.
Is the walk difficult?
No — a boardwalk and trail loop the valley floor and the walk is short and shaded rather than strenuous, though a torch helps in the dark tunnel section and grippy shoes help on the damp path.
What else is nearby in western Uthai Thani?
Thap Salao Dam and the Lan Sak district caves make natural add-ons for the same day trip, along with Tham Prathun Non-Hunting Area, the reserve Hup Pa Tat itself sits within.
