Maenam Song Si Viewpoint

At Khong Chiam, in the far east of Ubon Ratchathani, the Mun River runs into the Mekong and the two flow side by side in visibly different colours before they fully merge. Maenam Song Si — “two-colour river” — is free to view from the riverfront, and the contrast is at its most striking in the rainy season, not the dry months many guides assume.
The colour difference comes down to sediment and flow control rather than anything mystical: the Mekong picks up heavy silt as it swells during the rains and runs a reddish, almost chalky brown, while the Mun, regulated downstream by the Pak Mun Dam, stays a comparatively clear blue-green. Where the two currents meet, you can see a genuine line in the water for some distance before they blend. Locals describe it as “Khong si poon, Mun si khram” — chalky-red Mekong, indigo Mun. After a stretch of upstream rain, roughly August through October, the line is usually at its sharpest.
The standard viewing spot is the riverfront in Khong Chiam town, near the pier and the riverside temples, and it’s an easy, flat walk from the parking area. A few operators run longtail boats out to the confluence itself if you want to get closer than the bank allows. Laos sits directly across the water, close enough to make out buildings and boats on the far side.
Insider Tip: Check conditions upstream before you go — the contrast depends on recent rainfall and dam releases on both rivers, so it can look dramatic one week and barely noticeable the next. Locals at the riverfront restaurants usually know if it’s “showing” that day.
Watch out: Don’t build a whole day trip around guaranteed colours. On a quiet week, or right after a Pak Mun Dam release evens out both rivers, the line can fade to almost nothing — treat the confluence as a bonus alongside the rest of what Khong Chiam offers, not the sole reason to come.
- Entry: Free
- What it is: Confluence of the Mekong (reddish-brown) and the Mun (clearer blue)
- Best time: Rainy season, roughly Aug-Oct, after upstream rain
- Where to view: Khong Chiam riverfront; longtail boats available for hire
- Nearby: Laos visible across the river; easy pairing with Pha Taem National Park
Khong Chiam is a small riverside town with restaurants, a market and several temples, so this is easily combined with a longer stop. Pha Taem National Park, a short drive away, has clifftop Mekong sunrise views and 3,000-year-old rock paintings, and Wat Tham Khuha Sawan gives an elevated view over the same confluence from its riverside bluff.
