Pak Nam Laem Sai Fortress is a mid-19th-century gun emplacement on Laem Sai Road in Songkhla, built to guard the strait where Songkhla Lake — Thailand’s largest natural lake — narrows into the Gulf of Thailand. Chao Phraya Wichienkiri (Boonsang na Songkhla), the province’s governor at the time, commissioned it between 1847 and 1859 during the reign of King Rama IV. Entry is free, there’s no fixed opening hours, and the whole site can be seen in 20-30 minutes.

What survives is an octagonal-plan stone-and-brick emplacement: essentially a rectangular fort with its four corners cut away to create eight sides, a common design for coastal gun batteries of the period. The remaining walls sit low — roughly waist to shoulder height rather than the towering ramparts you’d find at a walled city — reflecting its purpose as a gun platform rather than a garrisoned stronghold. It stands near Khao Tung Khuan hill, close to the current Provincial Police headquarters in Mueang Songkhla district, a short walk from the water’s edge where the lake narrows to a roughly 380-metre-wide channel before opening into the Gulf.

The setting does more of the work than the ruin itself. Fishing boats still work the strait much as they would have when the fort was garrisoned, and the salt air and gull calls make it easy to picture the original sightline down the channel. It’s a modest stop rather than a headline attraction — worth combining with Songkhla’s old town rather than visiting on its own.

Insider Tip: Pair this with Khao Tang Kuan hill nearby — the two sites share the same defensive-era context, and Khao Tang Kuan’s viewpoint gives you the elevated perspective on the strait that the fort itself, being low-walled, doesn’t.

Watch out: There’s minimal signage in English at the site itself, and no shade over the open ramparts — bring sun protection if visiting midday.

Early morning is the most comfortable time to visit, both for lighting and to avoid the midday heat over the exposed stonework. The fort is a short drive from Songkhla town centre; wear shoes suited to uneven stone surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was Pak Nam Laem Sai Fortress built?
In the mid-19th century, between 1847 and 1859 (the reign of King Rama IV), commissioned by Chao Phraya Wichienkiri (Boonsang na Songkhla), the governor of Songkhla at the time, to guard the town's approach from the sea.
What does the fort look like today?
An octagonal-plan stone-and-brick gun emplacement — a rectangular fort with all four corners cut off to give it eight sides — with low ramparts roughly waist-to-shoulder height rather than tall defensive walls. It's a compact, open-air ruin rather than a fortress you walk inside.
Where exactly is the fort?
On Laem Sai Road near Khao Tung Khuan hill, close to the Provincial Police headquarters in Mueang Songkhla district — right where Songkhla Lake (Thale Sap) narrows to a strait before meeting the Gulf of Thailand.
Is there an entrance fee?
No — it's a free, open-air archaeological site with no ticket booth or fixed opening hours.
Is this the same as Songkhla's old city wall?
No, they're separate sites. The [Songkhla Old City Wall](/attraction/songkhla-old-city-wall/) is a different fortification from the same defensive era, on the opposite side of the old town.
