Rawai Beach – Lon Island
หาดราไวย์
Rawai Beach is a working fishing pier in southern Phuket, not a place to swim. Longtail boats and speedboats crowd the shallow bay, the shoreline turns to rock and exposed mudflat at low tide, and the main draw is what leaves from here rather than what happens on the sand.
The waterfront is lined with seafood restaurants where you pick your fish straight from the ice — grilled or steamed to order, typically 150-400 THB depending on the catch. Longtail boats return through the morning with the day’s haul, engines puttering across water that’s often too shallow and boat-crowded for a comfortable swim. Watch out: if you’ve come for a beach day, Rawai isn’t it — Nai Harn Beach, about 2km away, has clean sand and calmer water and is the better stop for swimming.
Rawai’s real function is as the departure point for island trips. Longtail and speedboat charters leave the pier for Koh Lon, a quiet island 15-20 minutes offshore, as well as Coral Island, Racha Yai and Koh Bon. A private longtail round trip to the nearer islands runs roughly 1,500-2,200 THB depending on the destination and how hard you negotiate; group speedboat tours to Coral Island or Racha Yai are sold from stalls along the pier road.
The area around the pier is also home to one of Phuket’s last Chao Ley (Urak Lawoi) sea gypsy communities — among the island’s oldest inhabitants, with their own spoken language and animist traditions distinct from mainland Thai culture. The village has shrunk under development pressure and land disputes over the years, but it’s still there, and its boats are part of the same daily catch that lands at the fish market by the pier.
Insider Tip: Go early. Boats and restaurants both get busier from mid-morning, and the fishing fleet itself — arguably the most interesting thing to watch at Rawai — comes in earliest.
- Entry fee: Free, open access
- Best for: Seafood, watching the fishing fleet, chartering boats to nearby islands
- Not for: Swimming — try Nai Harn Beach, 2km away
- Getting there: About 20 minutes by taxi from south Phuket, ~45 minutes from the airport
- Best time: November-April for calm seas and clear island-hopping conditions
Visit during the dry season, November to April, when the sea is calmest for the crossing to any of the nearby islands. Bring cash — most boat operators and seafood stalls don’t take cards.
