Laem Phromthep

Phuket’s southernmost tip delivers some of Thailand’s most spectacular sunset views, where the Andaman Sea stretches endlessly toward the horizon. This rocky headland has earned its reputation as the island’s premier sunset-watching destination, drawing photographers and romantics from around the world. The elevated vantage point offers panoramic views across multiple beaches and islands, creating a natural amphitheater for one of nature’s daily performances.
Climbing the short trail to the lighthouse rewards visitors with sweeping 270-degree ocean views that encompass nearby islands dotting the turquoise waters. The red and white Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse — built to mark the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol’s accession — stands as a prominent landmark, and you can climb it for a 360-degree view. Nearby sit the Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak Monument, honouring the prince regarded as the father of the modern Thai navy, and a shrine to Brahma (Phrom), the deity after whom the cape is named, where visitors leave carved wooden elephants as offerings. Even so, the real draw is the dramatic clifftop scenery surrounding it. As evening approaches, the western sky transforms into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, while the sound of waves crashing against the rocks below creates a natural soundtrack. Small vendors sell refreshments and souvenirs near the viewing areas, and you’ll often catch the scent of grilled corn and fresh coconut water mixing with the salty sea breeze.
Excitement builds as sunset time approaches, with crowds gathering along the rocky outcrops and designated viewing platforms. The atmosphere becomes almost festival-like during peak season, as couples pose for photos and families claim prime spots for the main event. Despite the crowds, there’s something magical about sharing this daily ritual with fellow travelers, all united in appreciation of the natural spectacle unfolding before them.
Arriving at least 30 minutes before sunset ensures the best viewing spots and allows time to explore the area thoroughly. The site is easily accessible by car, motorbike, or taxi from anywhere in southern Phuket, with ample parking available. Bring a camera, sunscreen, and perhaps a light jacket for the evening breeze. While sunrise visits offer solitude and equally impressive views, sunset remains the prime time when Laem Phromthep truly shines as one of Phuket’s most rewarding natural attractions.
