Sanlugmuang Samut Sakorn
ศาลเจ้าพ่อหลักเมืองสมุทรสาคร
The Samut Sakhon City Pillar Shrine (ศาลเจ้าพ่อหลักเมืองสมุทรสาคร) stands beside the Tha Chin River in Mahachai, close to the historic Wichian Chodok Fort. Free to enter and open daily 08:00-18:00, it’s the spiritual centre of Samut Sakhon and an important gathering point for the province’s fishing community.
The current Chinese-style building, with its ornate tiled roof, dates from a 1982 reconstruction — the shrine itself traces back through the Ayutthaya period, when the deity was represented by little more than a metre-high bodhi-wood plank, and a 1917-18 renovation under governor Phraya Sakorn Kana Thirak that gave it a formal Thai-style hall. Inside, the principal image today is Chao Pho Wichian Choti (เจ้าพ่อวิเชียรโชติ), gilded and carved from bodhi wood in the style of Phra Sayam Thewathirat, shown standing with the right hand raised in blessing and the left holding a staff. Behind the main shrine building stands the city pillar itself, housed in a pyramidal structure with staircases on three sides — reportedly the largest lak mueang (city pillar) in Thailand.
Fishermen traditionally pay their respects here, and many set off fireworks before sailing out in the hope of safe passage and a good catch. The shrine’s biggest event is the Procession of Chao Pho Lak Mueang, held on the 11th day of the fifth lunar month (usually falling in May or June): a water procession of decorated fishing boats along the Tha Chin combines with a land procession through Mahachai market, drawing devotees from across the province with communal meals and free entertainment over several days.
Outside festival dates, the shrine is quiet enough for a 20-30 minute visit. It’s easily reached on foot from Mahachai station on the Mahachai commuter rail line, or by taxi from central Samut Sakhon town.
Insider Tip: Walk around to the rear of the shrine to see the pyramidal pillar structure — many visitors stop at the main hall and miss it entirely.
Watch out: The 11th-day lunar-month procession date shifts against the Western calendar each year — check a current Thai lunar calendar or the shrine’s Facebook page before planning a trip around it.
