Ban Thachalom Tourism Information Center
บ้านท่าฉลอม
Also known as: Baan Thachalom Tourism Information Center, Ban Tha Chalom, ท่าฉลอม
Baan Thachalom Tourism Information Center sits in the old riverside community of Tha Chalom, across the Tha Chin River from Mahachai in Samut Sakhon. The short ferry crossing from Mahachai pier — three baht per person — delivers you into a neighbourhood with genuine historical weight: Tha Chalom was designated Thailand’s first sukhaphiban (sanitary district) in 1905 under King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who singled out the area as a model for local self-government. That reform history, rooted in the community’s long role as a Chinese-Thai fishing and salt-trading port dating to the Ayutthaya period, is what the centre documents.
The information centre itself is a community-run base for exploring the neighbourhood, with maps, local history panels, and guidance on the street art murals that now cover many of the old shophouse walls. The murals draw on local identity — mackerel, salt flats, river scenes — the industries that built the town. Beyond the centre, the surrounding lanes hold Chinese temples, the old fresh market, and the historic Thawai Road, opened by royal ceremony in 1905.
The centre operates Saturdays and Sundays, 09:00–17:30, and is free to enter. From Bangkok, take the Wong Wian Yai–Mahachai rail line to Mahachai station, then walk to the pier for the three-baht ferry to Tha Chalom. A bicycle rickshaw covers the street-art circuit efficiently. Mornings are coolest, when the market stalls are active.
