No US airline flies direct to Thailand. Every route involves at least one connection — and where you connect changes the price by hundreds of dollars and the journey time by hours.
This guide covers the realistic options from the major US gateways, what fares look like by season, and how to find the right combination for your trip.
How to think about US-Thailand routes
There are three broad routings:
- Trans-Pacific via Asia — depart from the US West Coast, connect at Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, or Hong Kong, fly south to Bangkok. Total 18-22 hours. The shortest viable option from the West Coast.
- Trans-Atlantic via the Gulf — depart from the US East or Midwest, fly to Doha, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi, connect to Bangkok. Total 19-23 hours. The standard East Coast routing.
- Trans-Atlantic via Istanbul or Helsinki — newer routings on Turkish and Finnair. From the US East Coast, often cheaper than the Gulf options but with longer connection times.
US passport holders fly visa-free for 60 days; no advance visa needed. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is required and must be completed online before flying.
West Coast (LAX, SFO, SEA)
The shortest routes and the most competitive market. Five major airlines fly daily from California or the Pacific Northwest to East Asian hubs, with onward connections to Bangkok.
| Carrier | Routing | Typical economy return | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EVA Air | LAX/SFO/SEA → Taipei → Bangkok | $750-1,100 | Best value premium economy and business. Same airline both legs. |
| Korean Air | LAX/SFO/SEA → Seoul → Bangkok | $800-1,200 | Strong service, modern fleet. SkyTeam partner with Delta. |
| ANA | LAX/SFO/SEA → Tokyo Haneda/Narita → Bangkok | $850-1,300 | Star Alliance. Smooth Tokyo connection. |
| Japan Airlines (JAL) | LAX/SFO/SEA → Tokyo → Bangkok | $850-1,300 | Oneworld. Often pairs with American Airlines award redemptions. |
| China Airlines | LAX/SFO → Taipei → Bangkok | $700-1,000 | Often the lowest fare. SkyTeam. |
| Cathay Pacific | LAX/SFO/SEA → Hong Kong → Bangkok | $900-1,400 | Premium product, premium prices. |
Total journey: 18-22 hours from West Coast to Bangkok including 2-3 hour Asian connection.
For Phuket specifically, the same airlines route through their Asian hub and offer onward Phuket service. EVA via Taipei to Phuket is often the cleanest single-ticket option.
East Coast (JFK, EWR, BOS, IAD)
The East Coast routes go east across the Atlantic to the Gulf or Asian hubs. Slightly longer journey than the West Coast but a wider price range.
| Carrier | Routing | Typical economy return | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qatar Airways | JFK/BOS/IAD → Doha → Bangkok | $850-1,300 | Consistently the cheapest premium carrier. Oneworld. |
| Emirates | JFK/EWR/BOS/IAD → Dubai → Bangkok | $900-1,400 | A380 service. Frequent. |
| Etihad | JFK/IAD → Abu Dhabi → Bangkok | $850-1,250 | Often matches Qatar pricing. |
| Turkish Airlines | JFK/EWR/BOS/IAD → Istanbul → Bangkok | $750-1,200 | Often the lowest East Coast fare. Long Istanbul layover (3-4 hours typical). |
| Korean Air | JFK/EWR/BOS → Seoul → Bangkok | $950-1,400 | Asian routing from the East Coast. SkyTeam. |
| ANA | JFK/EWR/BOS/IAD → Tokyo → Bangkok | $1,000-1,500 | Premium. |
Total journey: 19-23 hours from East Coast to Bangkok with one connection.
Midwest and Texas (ORD, DFW, IAH, MSP, ATL)
Midwest and Texas routings to Thailand all involve either a same-country connection plus an Asian leg, or a single long Atlantic crossing to the Gulf.
- From Chicago (ORD) — ANA via Tokyo, Korean Air via Seoul, Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha all direct from ORD. EVA via Taipei is a code-share with United.
- From Dallas (DFW) — Korean Air via Seoul (the only Asian one-stop from DFW), Qatar via Doha, Emirates via Dubai. American partners with Qatar for the cheapest routing.
- From Houston (IAH) — Singapore Airlines via Manchester/Houston-Singapore is the cleanest premium route. EVA Air codeshare via United through LAX/SFO is the budget option.
- From Minneapolis (MSP) — Delta partners with Korean Air for SEA-Seoul-BKK; usually cheapest with one MSP-SEA segment.
- From Atlanta (ATL) — Delta and Korean Air codeshare to Seoul. Qatar from ATL via Doha.
Total journey from Midwest/Texas to Bangkok is typically 21-25 hours including 2 connections.
Cheapest months from the US

Comparing fares from the US
Skyscanner covers every airline that flies the US-Thailand market. Use the “Whole month” view to spot the cheapest day to depart from each US gateway. Skyscanner’s flexible-date search is particularly useful for US flyers because the price difference between Tuesday and Saturday departures can be $200-400.
For business and premium economy, also check the airline’s own site — Asian carriers often run unadvertised promotions that don’t appear on third-party search engines.
