The sea caves around Phang Nga Bay are the reason to do a kayak tour rather than a speedboat-only day out. At Panak Island, guides paddle you through low-roofed tunnels — locally called “Diamond Cave” for the mineral deposits on the walls — into a hidden inner lagoon where the jungle overhead lets through patches of sky. At Hong Island, the lagoon is enclosed by vertical limestone walls with a single chimney opening above. That’s what kayaks get you that big boats don’t.
Pickup from Phuket hotels runs in the morning, and you meet your guide for a briefing before boarding. The day moves through four main stops: Panak Island for the Diamond Cave lagoon, Hong Island for its chimney lagoon, James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) itself for the famous leaning rock pillar from the 1974 film, and Koh Tapu alongside for the balanced-rock photo angle. Between stops, lunch is served on board, along with tea, coffee, soft drinks, and bottled water. Onboard restrooms, admission fees, and the canoe and paddle are all included. The guide handles most of the technical paddling through the cave sections — you’re really sitting in the kayak rather than steering it.
Seven hours, easy difficulty, capped at 15 people. The pace is relaxed and suits families, first-time kayakers, and anyone who wants a full day on the water without a serious workout. Pregnant travellers and anyone with spinal or cardiovascular issues should skip it; infants need to sit on an adult’s lap through the kayak sections. Alcoholic drinks and tips aren’t included.
Dry season (November to April) gives the calmest seas for cave access. In the monsoon months the tour runs most days but the Hong Island lagoon can close if swells push water into the chimney opening unpredictably — check on the morning if you’re booking in August or September.
