Bang Rak Noi Agritourism
ศูนย์เกษตรบางรักน้อย
Bang Rak Noi is a riverside subdistrict of Mueang Nonthaburi, just across the Chao Phraya from Bangkok, where a surviving century-old orchard still grows the durian varieties that made Nonthaburi’s name in Thai fruit-growing. Entry is 10 THB, daily 06:00-18:00, but the orchard is only really worth the trip in season.
The trees — old Nonthaburi cultivars including Mon Thong, Kan Yao and several Kop-group varieties — grow on raised beds threaded between narrow water channels, the traditional method that let farmers control flooding on this low-lying riverbank. In the April-May harvest, which overlaps with the annual Nonthaburi Durian Festival, you can walk the orchard rows, watch pickers test fruit for ripeness by the sound it makes when tapped, and buy durian straight from the grower rather than a Bangkok stall — Nonthaburi durian commands some of the highest prices in the country precisely because so little of the old orchard land survives. Mangosteen and mango ripen alongside it in the same window.
Outside harvest season there’s little to see beyond the orchard itself and the quiet, old-Nonthaburi riverside setting — this is working family land, not a managed tourist site with year-round programming. Weekday mornings in season are calmer than weekends, when local buyers and day-trippers compete for the best fruit.
The setting is what separates it from a durian stall anywhere else in Thailand: narrow dirt paths between the raised beds, the smell of ripe fruit under the trees, and the Chao Phraya running close by on one side. Older growers here can usually point out which trees are decades old, part of the small surviving patch of the orchard land that once covered much of this stretch of riverbank before Bangkok’s sprawl and land prices pushed most of it out.
Insider Tip: Call ahead during April-May to check which trees are fruiting that week — durian ripens unevenly tree by tree, and a phone call saves a wasted trip if the grove you want is between harvests.
Watch out: This isn’t a durian market with dozens of vendors — it’s one working orchard. Arrive expecting a small-scale, seasonal visit rather than the volume and variety of a commercial fruit market.
