Bueng Phlan Chai is the artificial lake at the centre of Roi Et town, a roughly 200,000 square metre reservoir ringed by parkland with a footbridge out to a central island. Entry is free, open daily 04:00-21:00.

The island is the reason this is more than a city park — it holds the provincial City Pillar Shrine (Lak Mueang), the spiritual centre point that appears on Roi Et’s official seal, along with a golden walking Buddha statue toward the northwest end and flower gardens around it. A monument depicting the Thai constitution resting on a ceremonial footed tray stands nearby, alongside a flower clock and a small artificial waterfall known locally as Phu Phalan Chai. Scattered animal sculptures and a large lotus pond fill out the rest of the grounds. None of it requires a boat to reach — a bridge carries you straight across from the mainland park.

The perimeter itself is where Roi Et actually uses the park. The paved path around the water draws joggers, badminton and football games spill onto the open lawns, and toddlers feed the fish that gather along the banks. Pedal boats are available for hire if you want to get out on the lake rather than just walk around it. Vendors selling som tam and grilled snacks set up near the entrances in the late afternoon, which is also when the shrine and the walking Buddha statue are lit for the evening.

Insider Tip: Come in the early evening rather than midday — the heat off the open water is brutal by noon, but from around 17:00 the park fills with locals exercising and the lighting around the shrine and lake makes for the better photos anyway.

Watch out: There’s very little shade on the open lawns and lakeside paths in the middle of the day. Bring a hat and water if you’re visiting outside the early morning or evening window.

Key Facts:
  • Entry: Free, daily 04:00-21:00
  • On the island: City Pillar Shrine, golden walking Buddha statue, flower gardens
  • Also on-site: Constitution monument, flower clock, Phu Phalan Chai artificial waterfall, pedal boat hire
  • Location: Central Mueang Roi Et, walkable from most town-centre hotels

Bueng Phlan Chai works as an easy half-day stop rather than a destination in itself — pair it with Wat Burapha Phiram or the Roi Et National Museum nearby, both an easy walk or short songthaew ride from the lake, to fill out a morning in town before the afternoon heat sets in.
