Hat Mai Rut is a small beach fronting a working fishing village in Khlong Yai district, near Trat’s border with Cambodia. The sand here is mixed with small stones rather than the fine white sand further up the Trat coast, and the water stays calm and clear for most of the year. Longtail boats line the shore, and the pace of the place is set by the fishing schedule, not tourism — this is a village with a beach, not a beach resort. Entry is free, and there’s no set closing time beyond common sense around dusk.
Early morning is when the village is most active, as boats come in with the day’s catch and nets get spread out to dry along the sand. A handful of local vendors sell drinks, snacks, and simple seafood dishes near the shore, but there’s no developed strip of restaurants or beach bars. The clearest reason to come is the quiet: outside a few resort bungalows, there’s little tourist infrastructure, and the loudest sounds most of the day are waves and boat engines.
Insider Tip: Sunset is the best time to be here — the fishing boats moored offshore silhouette against the colour in the sky, and the beach empties out as the day’s activity winds down. It’s a low-key, unpolished version of a Thai sunset rather than a staged photo spot.
Watch out: Facilities are minimal and shade is limited in the middle of the day. There’s no lifeguard cover, so treat the water with the same caution you would any unsupervised beach, and bring your own sun protection and drinking water.
The rainy season (roughly June-October) brings rougher seas and less reliable weather; November through March gives the calmest water and easiest conditions for a swim.

For more of Mai Rut’s community-run side, Mai Rut Community Tourism Enterprise runs homestays, farming visits, and firefly boat tours from the same village. Thai Red Cross Society, Khao Lan and its refugee-history museum sit about 10 minutes up the road, and the Ban Hat Lek Border Market makes a natural add-on if you’re exploring the coast road further south (note the Cambodia border crossing there has been closed since June 2025). The Trat destination guide covers the wider province.
