Two weathered granite formations at the southern end of Lamai Beach have become one of Koh Samui’s most photographed roadside stops, known locally as Hin Ta and Hin Yai — Grandfather Rock and Grandmother Rock. Millions of years of wind and sea have shaped them into forms that closely resemble male and female anatomy, which is the entire reason they’re famous. The rocks themselves are free to see; parking costs 20 THB for a bike, 40 THB for a car.
The rocks
A signposted turn-off from the coast road leads down to the site, where a short path runs along the rocky shoreline to the two formations. “Grandfather” sits nearer the water’s edge; “Grandmother” is a little further along among the coastal rock. Both are exactly what the nicknames suggest, and most visitors’ first reaction is a laugh rather than reverence — that’s the point. A row of vendor stalls lines the path down, selling drinks, snacks and souvenirs to the steady stream of visitors.
Insider Tip: Get there for 8:30-9am. By mid-morning in high season the narrow access road and small parking area fill up, and the light is flatter for photos by then too.
Practicalities
The site sits right on Lamai Beach’s main coast road, so it’s easy to combine with a wider loop of the beach or other south Samui stops. There’s no shade to speak of on the rock path itself, and the footing on the granite can be uneven and slippery when wet.
Watch out: The rocks get slick after rain, and there’s a real drop onto jagged stone if you climb out for a closer photo — sensible shoes help more than flip-flops here.
- Entry fee: Free (parking 20 THB bike / 40 THB car)
- Hours: No set hours — daylight visiting
- Best time: Early morning, 8:30-9am, for light and fewer crowds
- Getting there: Southern end of Lamai Beach, signposted turn-off from the coast road
- On site: Vendor stalls selling snacks, drinks and souvenirs
Hin Ta Hin Yai pairs easily with the Guan Yu Shrine, a couple of kilometres up the coast, or Na Muang Waterfall a short drive inland if you want to turn the stop into a half-day loop.
