Also known as: Na Muang Waterfalls, Na Mueang Waterfall, Namuang Waterfall, Purple Waterfall Koh Samui, Na Muang 1, Na Muang 2, น้ำตกหน้าเมือง

The falls are named for the deep purple-grey of the rock, stained by mineral deposits. Na Muang 1 drops around 18 metres into a natural pool wide enough to swim in, a five-minute walk from the car park along a shaded path that gets slippery after heavy rain. Na Muang 2, roughly two kilometres further inland, is the taller of the pair at around 80 metres, but reaching it means a 35-minute hike on steep, root-tangled ground — proper shoes, not sandals. Both flow strongest in the weeks following heavy rain, typically October through January, though the October–November peak brings enough mud on the upper trail to make it genuinely hazardous.

The swimming at Na Muang 1 is the main draw: the pool is cool, the rocks are shaded by late morning, and entry is free. Be aware the depth varies sharply — you can step off a submerged ledge into water well over your head without warning. At Na Muang 2, the plunge pools are shallower but the rocks at the water’s edge are extremely slick. Several serious accidents have occurred here over the years; the ropes are there for a reason, use them. Both sites are busiest between 10 am and 2 pm when tour buses arrive from Chaweng and Lamai — arriving before 9 am gives you the falls largely to yourself.

Key Facts:
  • Na Muang 1 height: approximately 18 metres; Na Muang 2: approximately 80 metres (highest on the island)
  • Entry: free; parking 20 THB for motorbikes, slightly more for cars
  • Opening hours: approximately 08:00–17:00 daily
  • Na Muang 2 hike: 35 minutes one way, steep; not suitable for young children or anyone without grip-soled footwear
  • Located in Tambon Na Mueang, southern interior of Koh Samui, off Route 4169

Insider Tip: The best angle for Na Muang 1 is from the rocks on the opposite bank to the main viewing area — cross via the stepping stones when the flow allows, and you get the full cascade without the tour-group crowd in the foreground.

Watch out: The elephant-riding and “safari” operations clustered near both car parks are not worth your money or endorsement. The animals work under conditions widely criticised by welfare organisations, and the activity adds nothing to the waterfall visit itself.

How to Get There

Follow Route 4169 south from Nathon or inland from Lamai; signed from the main ring road. By scooter or car only — no public songthaew route serves the site directly. The car park for Na Muang 1 is approximately 12 km from Nathon pier.
