Khao Fa Chi is a 259-metre viewpoint in Ranong’s La-Un district where the La-Un and Kra Buri rivers converge before emptying into the Andaman Sea, with the hills of Myanmar visible across the water on a clear day. It’s one of the province’s most-cited sunset spots — the westward view over the river confluence and the Kra Isthmus is what draws people up the access road in the late afternoon, more than the sunrise, though both are technically visible from the summit.
The site sits on Highway 4 (Phet Kasem Road), near the km 580 marker, where a turnoff signed for the Khao Fa Chi telecommunications station leads about 3 km up the mountain to the parking area and lookout. A telecom relay station shares the hilltop with the viewing point, a reminder this is a working piece of infrastructure as much as a tourist stop. During the Second World War the area was used as a Japanese military position, one of several sites in this stretch of the Kra Isthmus tied to that history — see the Ancient Train Cemetery and Japanese military escape route elsewhere in Ranong for more of that wartime story. The wartime use at Khao Fa Chi itself isn’t signposted in detail on-site, but it’s part of the area’s documented past.
Insider Tip: Arrive with 30-45 minutes to spare before sunset — the light over the river confluence changes fast in the last stretch, and the drive up leaves little room to rush once you’re on the narrow access road.
Watch out: There’s no food, coffee, or shelter at the summit — several recent visitor reviews flag this as the site’s main gap. Bring water, and be prepared for the viewpoint to feel underdeveloped: a lookout platform and not much else.
Cool-season months (November to February) give the clearest long-distance views toward Myanmar; during the rainy season, cloud and haze regularly cut visibility over the river mouth. The road is sealed but narrow and steep in sections, so a scooter with good brakes or a car is preferable to attempting it on foot.

Khao Fa Chi rewards travellers with their own transport and a specific plan to catch the evening light — it’s a quick, worthwhile detour off Highway 4 between Ranong town and Kra Buri, not a place to build a whole day around.
