Which area to stay in
White Sand Beach
The longest and liveliest beach on Koh Chang. Most restaurants, bars, and mid-range hotels cluster here. Good all-round base with easy songthaew connections.
Lonely Beach
Backpacker heartland in the south — bungalows, beach bars, and a younger crowd. The beach itself is narrow but the vibe is relaxed and the sunsets are excellent.
Kai Bae
Mid-island option between White Sand and Lonely Beach. Mix of family guesthouses and small resorts, with a shallow, reef-sheltered bay that's good for snorkelling.
Bang Bao
A stilted fishing village at the island's southern tip. Good dive shops and boat trips depart from here. Atmospheric for an afternoon but limited for overnight stays.

When to go
Nov–Feb Dry season at its best — calm seas, reliable sunshine, and good dive visibility. Ferries run frequently and all resorts are open. The busiest and most expensive period, but deservedly so.
Mar–Apr Hot and increasingly humid but still mostly dry. Quieter than peak season with better rates. Dive visibility remains good through April. A smart window if you want Koh Chang without the December crowds.
May–Oct The SW monsoon hits hard on this SW-facing coast. Many resorts close or run reduced service; ferry crossings drop to a few daily runs. Waterfalls and jungle trails are spectacular, but beach days are unpredictable.

About Koh Chang

Koh Chang: Thailand’s Jungle Island
Overview
Thailand’s third-largest island sits 300 km east of Bangkok in Trat province, far enough from the southern island circuit to keep crowds manageable. Koh Chang draws travelers who want beaches backed by proper jungle — 70% of the island is covered in rainforest, with waterfalls cutting through the interior. The west coast has the developed beaches and resorts; the east coast stays quieter with fishing villages and mangroves. Unlike Koh Samui or Phuket, Koh Chang still feels like you’ve discovered something the package tourists haven’t found yet.
Top Things to Do
The island’s 25 attractions spread across beaches, jungle hikes, and island-hopping trips. White Sand Beach anchors the northern west coast with the widest strip of sand and most restaurants. Lonely Beach further south caters to backpackers and has the best bar scene. The interior waterfalls — Klong Plu and Than Mayom — make solid half-day hikes through dense rainforest. Snorkelling trips to the smaller islands south of Koh Chang reach clearer water than the main island’s beaches. The east coast fishing villages of Bang Bao and Salak Phet offer longtail boat trips through mangrove channels and fresh seafood straight off the boats.
Where to Stay
With 51 properties averaging $55 per night (ranging from free to $188), Koh Chang covers every budget. Dinso Resort & Villas and Little Sunshine Boutique Beach Resort & Spa lead the luxury end. Serenity Resort and The Chill Resort & Spa offer solid mid-range options with pool access and beach proximity. Budget travellers cluster around Lonely Beach where basic bungalows start under $20. White Sand Beach has the densest concentration of hotels if you want walkable restaurants and nightlife.
Getting There
Most visitors fly Bangkok to Trat (1 hour, several daily flights), then take a 30-minute minivan to the ferry pier. The ferry crossing takes 30-45 minutes. You can also drive from Bangkok in 4-5 hours via Highway 3, which works well if you’re renting a car. From Pattaya, the drive takes about 3 hours. Ferries run frequently during high season but reduce to a few daily crossings in low season.
Best Time to Visit
The Gulf coast wet season hits October through December, making November through March the sweet spot for dry weather and calm seas. April and May get hot but the island is quiet — good for deals. June through September brings occasional afternoon rain but the jungle turns its greenest and waterfalls run at full force. Dive visibility peaks between November and May.
Practical Tips
ATMs cluster around White Sand Beach and Klong Prao. Renting a scooter is the standard way to get around — the single main road runs down the west coast. The east coast road is steeper and less maintained. 7-Elevens appear at each major beach. Mobile signal covers the west coast well but drops on the interior hiking trails.
Insider Tip: Skip the west coast restaurants for dinner and take a songthaew to Bang Bao pier on the southern tip. The seafood restaurants built on stilts over the water serve the freshest catch on the island at half the tourist-beach price.

Frequently Asked Questions about Koh Chang
How do I get to Koh Chang from Bangkok?
The quickest route is to fly Bangkok to Trat (about 1 hour, several daily flights on Bangkok Airways), then take a 30-minute minivan to the ferry pier at Ao Thammachat, followed by a 30–45 minute ferry crossing to the island. By road, the drive from Bangkok takes 4–5 hours via Highway 3. Buses from the Eastern Bus Terminal in Bangkok run to Trat, where you connect to the ferry.
When is the best time to visit Koh Chang?
November to April is the dry season on the Gulf coast — calm seas, good dive visibility, and reliable weather for beach days. May to October brings occasional afternoon rain, but the jungle turns very green and waterfalls run at full force. Note that October and November can see heavier Gulf-side storms, so November to March is the safest window overall.
How do I get around the island?
Renting a scooter is the standard approach — the main paved road runs down the west coast, connecting White Sand Beach, Klong Prao, and Lonely Beach. Songthaews (shared pickups) also run the west coast route for 50–100 baht depending on distance. The east coast road is steeper and less maintained. There are no taxis in the traditional sense, but guesthouses can arrange pickups.
What is Koh Chang like compared to Phuket or Koh Samui?
Koh Chang is significantly less developed than either. About 70% of the island is national park rainforest, and the pace is slower. White Sand Beach has a stretch of bars and restaurants, but nothing on the scale of Patong. It suits travellers who want beach access plus jungle and mangrove activities without a big resort scene.
Are there other islands to visit from Koh Chang?
Yes — Koh Mak and Koh Kood are both reachable by ferry from Koh Chang's Bang Bao pier. Koh Mak is quieter with calm, shallow water suited to families and kayaking. Koh Kood is the least developed of the three and has some of the clearest water in the Gulf. Day trips or overnight stays are easy to arrange during high season.
