Lam Phra Phloeng Dam — signposted locally and on some maps by the transliteration “Lum Praplerng” — sits across the Lam Phra Phloeng River in Pak Thong Chai district, on the southern side of Korat province. The Royal Irrigation Department built it in the 1960s to supply irrigation and domestic water and to manage flooding downstream; the reservoir it created has since become a low-key local recreation spot, distinct from the better-known Lam Takhong Dam near Pak Chong on the Khao Yai side of the province.

The main draw is the reservoir itself: forested hills ring the water, and on a still morning the surface reflects them clearly enough for a decent photo without needing to wait for perfect light. Local anglers fish off the dam wall and banks for freshwater species; longtail boats can be hired to explore further out, and a boat trip upstream to Khlong Ki or Khun Chon waterfalls makes a half-day round trip of roughly 3-4 hours. Herons and kingfishers work the shallows early in the day. Picnic tables near the parking area give families a shaded spot to eat lunch with the water in view, and a short walking path runs along part of the shoreline.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings are close to empty here — this is a Thai family picnic-and-fishing spot rather than a tour-bus stop, so don’t expect facilities beyond parking, toilets, and a couple of food vendors near the entrance.

Watch out: Boat rental availability and regulations change with water levels and season — confirm with the site office (0 4437 3184) before planning a trip that depends on getting out on the water, especially in the dry season when the reservoir can drop significantly.

Reach the dam by car or motorbike from Korat city via the Pak Thong Chai road, roughly 40 km south — not from Khao Yai or Pak Chong, which sit on the opposite side of the province and lead to a different reservoir entirely. There’s no direct public transport to the site. Bring sun protection, water, and cash for the food vendors, since facilities are basic and there’s no on-site restaurant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lum Praplerng Dam the same as Lam Takhong Dam?
No — they're two different reservoirs in Korat province. Lam Takhong Dam is near Pak Chong, closer to Khao Yai National Park. This one, properly Lam Phra Phloeng Dam, is in Pak Thong Chai district, on the opposite side of the province.
Who built and manages the dam?
The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) built it across the Lam Phra Phloeng River in the 1960s, primarily for irrigation, domestic water supply, and flood control for the Pak Thong Chai area. Recreation is a secondary use.
Is it free to visit?
Yes, according to the official TAT listing — there's no entrance ticket for walking the dam area or the picnic grounds.
What is there to do besides look at the view?
Fishing off the banks, renting a longtail boat to explore the reservoir, and — with enough time — a boat trip to Khlong Ki or Khun Chon waterfalls further upstream, a round trip of roughly 3-4 hours.
How do I get there from Korat city?
Head south on the Pak Thong Chai road; the dam is reached via Takhop subdistrict, roughly 40 km from central Nakhon Ratchasima. There's no public transport directly to the site — a car or motorbike is the practical option.
