Natural History Park, Initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn
อุทยานธรรมชาติวิทยา ตามพระราชดำริ
The Natural History Park initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a royal forest-conservation and education project in the Tanaosri mountain range, covering roughly 132,905 rai across Suan Phueng and Tanaosri subdistricts in Ratchaburi province. It opened in 2004 to survey and protect the area’s forest, and to teach visitors about the region’s geology, plants, and social history. Entry is free, daily 09:00-16:30.
The park’s exhibition hall is modest by design: a permanent nature-information display with geological samples, bird photography, and background on the human communities living in the Tanaosri range, plus a small library and souvenir counter. It’s a 20-30 minute stop, not a headline attraction on its own — the real draw is the two nature study trails outside, which run 1 to 3 hours each and pass waterfalls, hot springs, old tin-mine remnants, and reserves of native plant species found along the Thai-Myanmar border hills. Rangers and staff run environmental education camps here for school groups, with hands-on sessions on local ecology rather than fossil displays.
Trail conditions vary with the terrain — expect uneven forest paths, some stream crossings, and no shade for stretches near the old mine workings. Cooler months (November-February) make for the most comfortable hiking; the hot and rainy seasons bring higher humidity and the chance of afternoon downpours on the longer trail. Wear proper walking shoes rather than sandals, since the ground stays uneven and occasionally slick even on the shorter loop.
Insider Tip: Call the park office (0 3224 0917 is the on-site number for trail and camp bookings) before setting out if you want to walk the full 3-hour trail — staff can confirm which sections are open and whether a guide is available, since parts of the reserve cross into working forest land.
Watch out: This is a conservation site with limited facilities, not a polished museum — don’t expect air conditioning throughout, interactive dinosaur exhibits, or food vendors beyond the small souvenir counter. Bring water and snacks for the trails.
Suan Phueng’s other attractions sit within a short drive: Bo Khlueng Hot Stream and Veneto Suan Phueng both make sense to pair with a morning at the park if you’re building a Suan Phueng day trip rather than treating this as a single stop.
