Pattaya Noi at Ubon Ratchathani
พัทยาน้อย
Pattaya Noi has no waterfall and no rapids — the name is a nickname, borrowed from the beach resort city, for a sandy freshwater shore on the Sirindhorn Dam reservoir in Sirindhorn District. Locals call the whole reservoir “ทะเลอีสาน”, the Isan Sea, because from the shoreline the water stretches to the horizon like open sea rather than a lake. The comparison to Pattaya is about the sand and the crowds on a busy weekend, not about nightlife or scale — this is a quiet district reservoir, not a resort town.
The shore itself is flat, grassy parkland running down to a strip of pale sand, with the reservoir’s grey-green water lapping in small wind-driven waves rather than a current. Floating restaurants moored just offshore serve grilled and steamed river fish, som tam, and grilled chicken — plastic chairs on a pontoon, order at the counter, food arrives by the same route you walked in on. Vendors near the car park rent inner tubes and life jackets for swimming off the shallows, and on busy weekends there are inflatable water slides anchored a short paddle out. It’s a place Ubon Ratchathani families drive out to for the day rather than a stop most foreign visitors have heard of before arriving.
Insider Tip: Weekday mornings are close to empty — the floating restaurants and tube rentals are still open, just without the queue. Weekends and public holidays bring crowds from the city, along with louder music from the restaurant pontoons.
Watch out: there’s no lifeguard and no clearly marked swimming zone. The reservoir bed drops off unevenly past the shallows, so keep children and weak swimmers close, especially if you’ve rented tubes for them.
Sunset is the best hour here — the flat water catches the colour and the day-trip crowds thin out as families pack up to head back to Sirindhorn or on to Ubon city. The dry season (roughly November to April) gives the clearest water and the most exposed sand; during the rainy season the reservoir level rises and the shoreline narrows. It pairs naturally with a stop at Sirinthon Dam itself, a short drive further along the reservoir, or Kaeng Tana National Park, which sits in the same district on the Mun River.
