Kaeng Lamduan is a set of natural rock rapids on a stream at Ban Non Lamduan, about 13 km from Phibun Mangsahan town in Ubon Ratchathani. The local subdistrict administration opened it as a managed picnic and swimming spot in 1994, and it still runs almost entirely on local visitors rather than tour groups. Entry is free.

The draw is a stretch of water carved through flat rock shelves, covering roughly 7 rai (about 1.1 hectares). In the dry season, from November through May, the flow drops enough to expose wide rock platforms where families spread mats in the shade and rent inflated inner tubes to float the shallower pools. Water levels rise through the rainy season (June-October), when the channels run harder and the rapids look more dramatic but the current gets stronger too. The Don Chik subdistrict office runs a two-day festival here on 10-11 April, close to the anniversary of the site’s 1994 opening, drawing the biggest local crowds of the year.

Watch out: the rocks are smooth and get slick with spray — wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops, and skip wading altogether after heavy rain when the current picks up fast.

Outside festival weekend, the mood is unhurried: extended families camped under the trees, kids wading in the calmer pockets, vendors nearby selling drinks and snacks rather than a formal food court. It’s the kind of place Ubon Ratchathani locals treat as a Sunday afternoon spot rather than a headline attraction, and that’s the appeal — no entry queue, no crowds to fight for a shaded patch of rock.

Insider Tip: Bring your own mat and cash for tube rental — there’s no ATM or 7-Eleven nearby, and card payment isn’t an option this far into Don Chik subdistrict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kaeng Lamduan free to visit?
Yes, entry is free. The site is maintained by the Don Chik subdistrict administration, which also organises an annual festival here on 10-11 April.
How do I get to Kaeng Lamduan?
It sits at Ban Non Lamduan, about 12-13 km from Phibun Mangsahan town along Highway 217, in Don Chik subdistrict. A car or motorbike is the practical way in — there is no public transport link.
Is it safe to swim at Kaeng Lamduan?
The rocks are exposed and the water shallow enough for wading through most of the dry season (November-May), which is when locals rent rubber tubes and picnic on the rocks. In the rainy season (June-October) the current through the narrow channels strengthens, so stick to the calmer pools and skip it after heavy rain.
Is Kaeng Lamduan the same as Kaeng Saphue?
No — they are separate rapids in the same district. Kaeng Saphue, in Phibun Mangsahan town itself, is the better-known Mun River rapids site; Kaeng Lamduan is a smaller, quieter local spot about 13 km away at Ban Non Lamduan.
