Princess Srinakarin Park
สวนสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทร์ สกลนคร
Princess Srinakarin Park covers 120 rai on the shore of Nong Han lake in central Sakon Nakhon — roughly 70 rai of gardens and 50 rai of water — a five-minute walk from Wat Phra That Choeng Chum. Entry is free, open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
Princess Srinakarin, the Princess Mother and mother of King Bhumibol, inaugurated the park herself on 9 November 1987. Sakon Nakhon Municipality has managed it since, and the dominant tree planted throughout the grounds is the golden shower — Ratchaphruek, Thailand’s national tree — which lines the lakeside paths in yellow when it flowers around April and May.
Walking and jogging paths trace the Nong Han shoreline, past fish-feeding spots where locals sell bags of bread for the carp gathering near the banks. Paddle boats rent out by the hour for a slow circuit of the water, food stalls cluster near the main entrance, and free aerobics classes run in both the morning and early evening, drawing more residents than tourists on an average day.
The park’s calendar goes beyond a daily stroll: it hosts Sakon Nakhon’s main Loy Krathong festivities each November, and during Buddhist Lent (roughly July to October) its lakefront is the standard viewing spot for the city’s long-boat races.
Nong Han itself is worth a second look beyond the paddle boats — at 125 square kilometres it’s the largest natural lake in northeast Thailand, and its islets and shoreline stretch well past the park’s own boundary if you want a longer walk.
Insider Tip: Show up around 17:00 if you want to see the park at its liveliest — that’s when the aerobics classes and evening joggers are out in force and the lake catches the last of the daylight. Come at opening instead for quieter photos.
Watch out: Swimming in Nong Han itself isn’t recommended — the lake has a history of parasite contamination. Stick to the paddle boats and the shoreline paths rather than getting in the water.
Getting there is straightforward by tuk-tuk or taxi from anywhere in central Sakon Nakhon. Combine the visit with Wat Phra That Choeng Chum next door, or walk the lakeshore a little further for wider views of Nong Han itself.
