Sai Ngam
ไทรงาม
Sai Ngam is a single banyan tree in Phimai, part of Korat province, that has spread its aerial roots into what looks like a small forest — around 1,350-1,500 square metres of interlocking trunks, all one organism. It’s free to enter, open roughly 06:00-18:00 daily, and sits on a small island in a pond about 2km from central Phimai.
The tree is thought to be around 350 years old. Its name means “beautiful banyan” (sai = banyan, ngam = beautiful), and what looks like a grove of separate trees is really one trunk’s root system: aerial roots drop from the branches, reach the ground, thicken, and become new supporting pillars, so the canopy keeps spreading outward rather than upward. A network of walkways lets you wander in among the trunks, and the arched roots form natural tunnels of shade. Small shrines and spirit houses sit among the roots, tended with incense and garlands by locals who consider the tree sacred — Queen Saovabha is recorded as having visited the site in 1911.
Insider Tip: Go in the early morning before the tour buses from Korat arrive. The light comes through the canopy at a low angle and the walkways are still quiet enough to hear birds rather than other visitors.
Across from the main path onto the island, a row of simple food stalls sells cheap Isan dishes — a reasonable lunch stop if you’re combining Sai Ngam with the Khmer ruins at Phimai Historical Park a few kilometres away. There isn’t much shade outside the tree itself, so the grove’s own canopy is the main relief from the heat once you’re inside it.
Watch out: The ground beneath the roots is uneven and can be damp near the pond edge — wear shoes with grip rather than flip-flops.
- Entry fee: Free
- Hours: Daily, approximately 06:00-18:00
- Age: Roughly 350 years, single trunk now covering ~1,350-1,500 sq m
- Getting there: About 2km from central Phimai; bicycle, tuk-tuk, or moto-taxi
- Nearby: Phimai Historical Park (Khmer sanctuary), a few kilometres away
Getting there is straightforward by car, motorbike, or bicycle from Phimai town — it’s a short ride, not a stop on the road between Nakhon Ratchasima city and Phimai, which is around 60km away. Most visitors treat Sai Ngam as a half-hour add-on to a visit to Phimai Historical Park or the nearby Phimai National Museum rather than a destination on its own, but the tree’s scale is worth seeing in person; photos flatten how far the roots actually spread.
